C230 Sport - Giving Code P1116 engine will not run

I was driving my 2006 C230 last night. It was running fine and then the engine really would just not accelerate. I pulled over and gave it some time and no dice. It would start (so obviously not starter/battery) and run for a few seconds but the engine generally wouldnt rev and then it would sputter out.

I hooked it up to an OBD2 reader today and got code P1116. I'm having a hard time figuring out what that is for Mercedes. Does anyone know? Thanks.

P1116 = Engine Coolant sensor out of range/ECT Sensor Out Of Self Test Range

Is the car running very rich & blowing black smoke out of the exhaust? Engine stumbles when you try & rev it? If the engine temp sensor fails the ECU usually thinks that the car is ice cold & fully enriches the mixture causing shocking running a black unburnt fuel smoke from the exhaust.

I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction but a failed CPS can also cause the problem you describe. Is the car going into limp mode?

Listen to the OBD first. Chase down that coolant sensor.

Thanks. Great reply. That sounds like what is happening. Any chance I can find that part on a Sunday in a city like Seattle and can a regular person replace it?

Hey, not sure if i can help you with the part on Sunday, but if its in the manual then the regular person can fix it. ANd its in the manual, so you can either get the manual from local Autozone, or i can scan the necessary steps to replace ECT. My guess finding the part would be the harder one out of the two. PM me if you want the scanned instructions. Good luck!

Yes easy - the temp sensor is mounted on a pipe on the passenger/RHS of the M271 engine.

Is your car a V6 - sorry just noticed it was 2006

If so M272 engine - see item 30 - Temp sensor

Thanks a bunch. Does anyone know where I can find the part? I have tried a few websites, but none of them seem to have it. It seems inexpensive (which for a Merc I'm rather surprised), so I'll probably just head to a dealership to pick it up.

In terms of the parts, the engine diagram shows parts 30 and 900 and 901 attaching to it. Do I need to replace all 3?

You don't need to replace all three - just the sensor. Try RMeuropean or Parts.com

Does something clip in to the top of the sensor? I looked yesterday and can't find it.
