Exhaust Flange - 06 C230
Hey folks,
Long time lurker - over the lifespan of owning my C230 (12 years) never needed to post before, always find the answer pretty darn quick here hehe. Bit stuck though with this one.
Been slowly developing a "deeper" exhaust sound over the past couple of weeks which suddenly took a turn for the worse with full on straight pipe yesterday on the way back from groceries haha. Does anyone know what flange attaches those pipes? I can't seem to find anything nor does it really look like a flange was on there previously - logic states otherwise. Any help you could give would be amazing - just trying to lurch her along a bit longer now @ 348,000kms = 208,800miles and just about ready to retire from service.

What happened is that the flanges on both pipes rusted off.
If you look at the cat-section to the Left, that lip is also rusted. That lip will not last long with a repair flange.
The correct and smart thing to do is to find an exhaust place that will cut the ends off of those pipes, and put on a new short section.
The front cat-section to the Left is EXPENSIVE! The exhaust-section to the Right is also expensive.
Once that lip rusts away on the cat-section, it can then damage either/both parts of the exhaust. Then, say "Hello to $2K->$4K for new cats and exhaust". Ouch!
Or, go to an exhaust place, have them cut the ends off of both pipes, put on a new short exhaust pipe to connect the two sections, then clamp/weld the new section to the two existing sections.
Below, to the right, is a semi-good picture that shows the flanges that are on both the exhaust section, and the cat-section.

For people reading this thread after the ebay listings have expired, try looking at pictures of 2006 C230 exhausts with Google:

For people that may have good sections on both parts, get two correct diameter repair flanges:
FYI: This may or may not be the correct diameter.

I ended up cutting off the flanges slipped in an inner pipe and welded one edge. Slide on a straight joint on top of that. I first tried without the inner pipe but there was too much sag.
