06 C230 cup holder

Fyi I ended up taking my cup holder out, pulling it apart, scraping off the chrome finish and repainted the ring with black satin paint. It's been several months now and I've forgotten about it until I received an email notice on activity for this thread. The paint has not peeled, chipped or faded. So I think I will be leaving it at this -- unless someone finds a good price on a replacement cup holder.

Sticking cup holder
My chrome is peeling as well so I will take your advise and paint it silver as I already have the paint. But my main problem is that it sticks and does not come up when I press the button. Probably some spilled soda/pop. Will soak in warm soapy water, lube the gears and re-install.
Thanks for the pictures on how to remove it.

Did you even read the thread you just replied to? There is totally sufficient information for you to do what you are asking.

Given that it's their first post here, and it is done in an annoying text style, my guess is no, they expect everyone else to do that for them.

Newbies are encouraged to look around before posting repetitive questions if at all possible, so that the same answer doesn't need to be posted again and again.
As jrsmith correctly pointed out, you're on the same thread that the answer is on. Do you really expect to be spoon fed answers like that? If so, your expectations really need to be dialed down to a more realistic level.
And FYI, the best place for a replacement for your cupholder is probably ebay. The classifieds section here is not too good, and the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg. If you do need it new, rmeuropean, parts.com, and mymercedesparts.com all should be a bit cheaper than the dealer, though they tend to be a bit clumsy with trying to get specific parts.

Thanks mskembo, unfortunately someone messaged me and told me that the part number I posted uptop is incorrect and refers to the circular rubber insert that goes inside the cupholder. I used this part number when I went to freehold mercedes here in central NJ, but I also brought the original chrome piece with me to show the parts and service clerk. He looked at it and brought me a brand new one. I found my invoice last night from the receipt and aparently the part I bought doesn't even have a part number. There is nothing listed under part number. just " ----". So I might have just gotten lucky. To all those looking to replace just the chrome piece, you might be out of luck because that part number will not help you. If you are just looking to fix the movement mechanism of the cupholder though, molykote will do you justice.
Vdemon, looks like you just got really lucky stumbling on a stash of the problem part at a dealership. Makes me wonder how many others are out there. The trim ring is obviously manufactured in mass by whoever manufactures the replacement cup holders, so I would think there is inventory somewhere in the world ... we just have to find it.
You paid $4 for the piece ... I'd be willing to pay upwards of $15 for it before considering purchasing an entire cupholder. And i'll bet others would too.
Thanks. John

For what it is worth....
1. Hot Water works: For the problem of the inside holder not coming up properly, most likely due to sticky drinks getting spilled, I simply used lots of HOT WATER AND A STRONG CLEANER.to get ride of the gunk. Messy but a lot better then ruining the whole thing by trying to replace it yourself. Of course, getting a body shop to do it properly would be best, but a lot more expensive.
2. Nail file works too. For the chrome ring bit, it WILL start to come off after many years of use. Mine actually would cut into foam coffee cups, leading to 1)....I just took scissors and a nail file to get ride of the chrome. But go slowly and gently. Can it do while at a stop light, too. Now mine is white, but it is not so bad. See 1) above.

(2) 2006 C230 sport editions, white with aluminum alloy trim, 7 speed transmission
re-installing the center trim
Just did this (replaced the whole cup holder assembly) and it was super easy using the photos provided (thanks!). One suggestion - when it comes to putting the shift trim piece back it helps to shift the car into "Drive" (keep your foot on the brake while doing it!) to give yourself some extra "play" to fit the trim piece back under between the cup holder and the arm rest. (It also helps to lubricate the trim edge a bit).

I used these instructions to paint my trim ring.
Before
After
I chose satin black because it blends in well with the rest of the cup holder. If I cannot have a replacement chromed-plastic ring, I guess this will do for now. I like the look much better than the off-white/yellowing plastic ring that made the interior look cheap.
If anyone knows whether the chromed rings are available (a part number would be helpful), where I might buy one and the cost, please share the information. It appears that one contributor to this thread bought one from the dealer, but no one else has repeated this success.

To remove the cup holder, open it up so that the top part is fully deployed. Reach down to the bottom and remove the rubber pad. That will reveal a torx fastener. I don’t recall the size, but it is likely a T20 Removing the torx fastener will release the cup holder. You will probably need to loosen the trim panel at the top of the center console to make room to extract the cup holder assembly. This video shows how to do it starting at about the 3 minute 40 second mark.
Good luck with your car.
