Car won't start. Pointers?

Came back from trip, needed to run errand. Turn over key, everything powers up normally. Turn key to start car, nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks.

If the car does not crank check fuse 52 & replace 15A with 20A

If it cranks check fuel pressure is min 3.8 bar. Be suspicious of CPS.

EDIT: you need fuses 31, 52 & 57 to enable start.

Check starter

Glyn M Ruck Oct 24, 2011 07:50 PM

99.9% of the time it is underated fuse 52 & not the starter motor.

if it does not click when you turn the key, check the starter, if it clicks and does not turn over, check your fuel pump. TC

Understood. My fuses were fine and it was the starter for me. About 140-50k miles at the time. Always check the easiest cheapest things first.

If your lights turn on but you car doesnt event attempt to crank. Doesnt this imply its your battery?

When my battery died, I called MB-Road side and they were able to tell me it was my battery by just having me try to turn on my headlights. They also came out and jumped me for free and I was on my way to getting a new battery.

If it is the battery. Your lights will generally come on but dim substantially when you attempt to crank.

Well...went to check fuses in all 3 locations, and found significant amount of water in motor compartment panel. All fuses good, but no lights and no crank. Battery appears to have plenty of juice. This could become expensive :-(

Water in the front SAM? - not good. Next to check is the starter relay & finally the starter motor

Thanks all for pointers so far. Gonna have battery tested just to verify its good.

Glyn M Ruck Oct 25, 2011 11:17 AM

Yep - get it properly load tested. If it were battery & would expect you to hear the starter bendix solenoid kick in but not crank.
