found a feature on the car this weekend, i feel so dumb

i've had my car for about 8 months and i just now figured something out. i'd folded the back seats down before to make room for cargo, but i just figured out this weekend that the butt part (the part you sit your butt on) of the back seats lift up and toward the front to make room for the back of the seats to lay down. i had been just laying the back of the seats down on top of the butt part. i saw the hinges for the butt part when i first got the car but had no clue what they were for and i just this weekend saw the pull handles. i feel dumb. guess i should have RTFM more carefully. i was so excited when i made the discovery cause it opened up even more room for cargo. only thing i didn't like was that i had to remove the back headrests so i could take my driver's seat as far back as i needed it. anyway, thanks for reading.

The only real benefit to lifting the part of the seat is to make room for the seatbelt clip. If you don't lift up the second part, the backs of the seats rest on the belt and when you lift it up you will have the inprint of the belt in your leather.

Ha! I found that feature the other way-that you could leave the butt part down and still fold the seats down. I like to do it that way sometimes becasue, as you said, you have to remove the head rests to get the seat back far enough with it flipped up. I've also found that you can lay the headrests on the floor behind the seat after you take them out to store them. My Grand Cherokee had a second set of holes in the back part of the butt part to hold them when the seat was vertical. Nice touch-wish MB would have done that.

There is a differerence if the butt part is up or down-the floor is much flatter. If I don't flip it up and put my dog's crate in there, he ends up sliding to the back of the car.

he didn't because he got the impression that i knew alot about the car, and i did, apparently no everything. he asked if i wanted him to show me all the features, but i just said no. i like finding these little things anyway.

There should be a button on the side of your headrest ( at least there is on mine ) that allows you to fold them out of the way.

Another advantage to folding the "butt part" up is that it protect the back of your seat, with steel from the seat bottom.
Something I've found useful when hauling music gear around.
Now if I can just get the dealer to do something abotu the plstic floor.....

I always flip the bottom part up when i fold down the rear seats. What sucks is everytime i fold the seats i get impressions on the leather after the seats are returned to the original position. And they stay there for up to 2 wks afterwards
wish it was designed better

even with the butt part up...some crap still leaves inprint on my seatback. I used it only once and never again. There is the ML and a minivan for that reason.
