w203 not starting after installing new fuel pump and filter! Please advise.

Hi guys,

On Wednesday, the car would crank but not turn over (start). I had replaced the battery about 4 months ago and the plugs. My mechanic replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter on Thursday. On Friday, I picked the car up and it started up multiple times and drove it up until this afternoon.

Today, after about an hour of sitting, I jump in the car and it cranks but doesn't start...wtf. I don't know what it can be.

The mechanic also checked the voltage on the battery and alternator and said it was fine.

Please advise.

Check the fuel pressure on the front rail. s/b >3.8 bar or 55 psi.

Could also be CPS ( crankshaft position sensor.)

edsg2 06-09-2013 06:43 PM

Thanks for the reply. I don't know exactly where the front rail is or the CPS. Are there pictures showing the locations?

Glyn M Ruck 06-09-2013 11:31 PM

See WIS doc for CPS replacement:

Thank you so much !

rear suspension

I also have this crazy creaking sound at the rear suspension that drive me nuts. I took to a indi shop and they stated no nut or bolt are loose. I replace shocks and swaybar bushings also rear endlinks. any advise would be appreciated.

You have a bad bush or something that need lubrication.

my indy mechanic replace both fluid pump and fluid filter and crank shaft censor the car was okay for a coupe weeks and the same problem occurred again crank but don't start. please advise thanks.

Glyn M Ruck 07-10-2013 04:11 PM

Check start enable fuses 31, 52 & 57

Go back & check fuel pressure & make sure the CPS is plugged in.

Thanks a lot . I scanned the car with obd and came up with po260 and clear and restart car and everything is fine for now. I will have to replace alternator or voltage regulator so I don't see battery / alternator code any more . I almost forget code po240 Also.

edsg2 07-23-2013 01:00 PM

hello there. I am hoping I can get a clear understanding of my issue. I replace my c230 valeo alternator regulator and my voltage is still reading 12 amp still .What are the other possibilities? thanks

Glyn M Ruck 07-24-2013 06:01 AM

P0240 = Turbocharger Boost Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance
P0260 = Injection Pump B Rotor/Cam Intermittent

These codes are spurious for your car.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Your alternator might need a rebuild but get someone to accurately read battery voltage & charge rate. The regulator should cut out at approx 14.2 volts.

These cars do sometimes throw an "alternator visit workshop" warning when other faults of an unrelated nature are present.

Clear all codes. Drive the car & report what comes back. You might have to get this car onto a Star. The info you are giving at present does not lead to a logical conclusion.

I am sorry about the previous code that I mention earlier. The code is actual po620 generator circuit. Still having after changing out Valero regulator with battery/alternator light. I also test voltage to battery and it states 12.5 while idling, wire and plug all in tact.

thanks evrett

thanks

Old rule, always go back to the last thing you did.
Obviously if there is no fuel pressure, the pump isn't working.
So the replacement pump failed OR also have heard of people not installing the fuel filter correctly causing problems.
Check your fuses for starters, and electrical connections at the pump.

Check to see if your fuel filter has been installed correctly. Some times the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

For reasons no one knows, Benz put the fuel regulator inside the fuel filter. I guess this gives more cabin space.

The trouble with the regulator in the filter is that aftermarket suppliers can't seem to understand the specifications for the regulator. If you have not got an OEM filter, find a Mahle-Knecht. They are the OEM.

Check the connections on the filter again. There are 4 hoses, make sure they all are sorted properly. For that matter make sure the pump has been plumbed properly.

I check the fuel filter hoses and they are connected properly and plummed . Thanks

I change fuel filter and the one hose that is connected to the middle nipple has no gas leaking from it .

crank but no start

Thanks guys, I get the car started it was my fuel pump apparently it was not seated properly. I just get a new code po456 can anyone advise on correcting this issue thanks.

Glyn M Ruck 08-22-2013 12:29 PM

P0456 = Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected
(very small leak)

Check that the fuel filler cap is properly seated.

EECS issues can be a pain to fix. Anything from a cracked filler pipe to connectors on the carbon canisters.

You need to check the whole purge system. There are many threads covering this & all the data & diagrams are in the Wiki.

thanks again .

Smoke detection works best but tends to be ineffective for very small leaks.

edsg2 09-09-2013 11:59 AM

please help! I would like to replace my motor mount on my 03 c230 coupe . any diy out there.

Glyn M Ruck 09-09-2013 06:29 PM

See W203 Wiki.

This is for a M272 engine but the principle is the same.
