no. It's mold. Some people sprays lysol on the air filter to make it dissapear. I put my air con at max for 10 mins to make it go away. It does come back but not so often.

many times the smell from an air conditioner comes from an incomplete drain of the condenser unit. (I'm no repair man but here is my best explanation - I had this done to an old car of mine to clear up smell/water problem) There is a drip tube from the condenser to the outside. You see the water under your car on a hot day? That comes down the drip tube. These can become clogged and allow water to build up and ..... mold! Any auto air shop can blow out the drip tube for you.

No health consequences from this particular mold. It's offensive, but not harmful. I'd be more concerned about what type of chemical you are spraying into the air filter -- fumes from many disinfectants can be harmful (although Lysol is probably pretty safe).

My dealer solved this problem. Ask them to check the TSBs.

turn off the AC...

I've had this happen on several cars. I try to turn off the AC (i.e., press "AC" so that the fan keeps running) a few minutes before I know I'll be shutting the car off and that usually solves the problem. Gives the condensation a chance to bake off (at least that's what I tell myself).

I have used this method for 25 years, and it always works. I am amazed that more of you haven't encountered this with other cars. I have never had an air conditioned car that didn't exhibit this.

it usually happen more often (from my understanding) from humidity and also if you do not use your A/C often (I think its even in manual, I know it was in my Audi manual). It is mold u're smelling. I dont know about these cars but I know they make a "cleaning" kit for older a/c system.
