Autoweek is usually a very neutral magazine, and I doubt any magazine would make a racial slurr. I think what the author meant was the countertop material called corian, not korean. This is my guess, because some corian countertops have a similar pattern to the c-coupe cloth. I could be wrong.

Also, for those of you who think Autoweek hates thet C-class...they had nothing but praise for the C32 and C320.

Well, I think AutoWeek meant to say Korean, just like all magazines meant to say "Japanese" regarding QC on the early imports in the late 70's... or typically "Swedish quirky" regarding the Saab's tunnel mounted ignition... or "typically French" regarding any Renault or Citroen... or "Latvian" vis-a-vis the Yugo, and "cheap" regarding most American hatchbacks of the late '70s... etc. I don't think the references are typically offensive, just cliche for the time in which they are written.

For every writer at one of these mags, there is an editor supervisor and another managing editor above, who each peruse copy for obvious typographical mistakes and editorial intent. There is far less control in your average 250-page daily newspaper. But, the term in question could not have made it to print by mistake in a 60-70 page weekly like AutoWeek.

Oh, and the March 5, 2001 AutoWeek article on the Coupe was very complimentary... just written by another pen.

Here is what Autoweek said about the Coupe July 31, 2001:

Mercedes C230 Sports Coupe
Mercedes is entering the cheap(ish) hatch market with its new C230 Sports Coupe. While BMW debates whether to bring its Euro hatch here, Mercedes will be up against cars such as the VW Golf GTI GLX and Saab 9-3. This is a fun car to drive as Benzes go. The 2.3-liter four's powerband is well suited to this chassis, but we'd recommend the six-speed manual (the automatics we've sampled sap quite a bit of power). When BMW tried to sell its compact here before, it couldn't convince enough buyers that slapping a prestigious badge on a four-cylinder hatchback made it a BMW. Will Mercedes have the same problem convincing buyers the coupe is a real Mercedes?

Hate to be a pain-in-the-a$$, but for fairness' sake, Yugo was a Yugoslavian "engineering marvel" rather than Latvian. In fact, as far as I remember, Latvia only makes a minivan called RAF.
(don't confuse with the Royal Air Force )

More than slightly off topic, accord, but why would anyone want to live in a place named Mouse Mouth? Any idea as to how it got such a silly name.

Send her an e-mail stating that you feel insulted based on your ethnicity. Try to make her feel bad, and don't be insulting to her.

Actually, don't email the women at all... there is nothing you can do about her insulting the C230, but i'm sure there must be some legal standing in which she insulted your ethnicity... you can sue everyone these days . Anyways, i'll ask Drew if anything can be done.

PLEASE!! Don't even joke about starting litigation over this "lady" and her "Korean" reference! The last thing the court systems need is another B.S. lawsuit. Grow some thicker skin and your feelings wouldn't get hurt so much.

BrabusCClass,

Where you born in the US or in Korea? I made a couple of trips to Seoul last year, and really loved the food and people. Unfortunately there are very few Korean restaurants in South Florida. I need a kimchi fix!

StevenN my friend has a Asian Market in Florida. In Bonita Springs I belive. If that is near you let me know and Ill get his info for you. You can get kimchee there. I was born in Seoul, grew up in LA. Been here basically a bit over 20 years.

Why do I need to be happy when people insult my ethnicity? Especially when it deals with a major publication like Autoweek. I do not belive that derogatory comments on ethnicity is appropriate for any type of major publication. Whether its Autoweek or Sport Compact Car, Time, ETC. Its foul and if the author is racist she should not be allowed to write articles where they print her racist comment. I dont know about you NJPaprika230 but I dont like it. Maybe you dont care. Thats you, please dont tell me how to live my life and what to tolerate.

Autoweek

What we are dealing with here is stereotypical preconceptions about what a Mercedes-Benz (and a Korean car) is.

The author that called the 2.3 L Kompressor a "tractor" engine might be interested to know that in the C's home country, only 8.8% of the sedans and wagons sold have V-6 engines (figures from 2001, from Auto Bild).

All the rest are four or five cylinder in-line engines, gas or Diesel. If the gas fours are tractor engines, I suppose that means the Diesel C Classes have UNIMOG engines Those Germans sure like tractors and UNIMOGs. All C Coupés of course have four cylinder engines.

In the ignorant parlance of the Autoweek "journalist", even the C-Class V-6 should be derided, for it is simply a Mercedes-Benz V-8 with two cylinders lopped off, and consequently has the unfortunate (for a V-6) 90 degree cylinder bank spacing, causing imbalances that are not possible to banish.

About the Korean slur, I believe what the author may have been referring to is the type of upholstery that one may have found in a 1984 Hyundai Pony. As opposed to being a general slagging of Korea.

On the other hand, the low quality of writing in the article and the author's free use of vapid superficiality may indeed betray a racist attitude.

In any event, it would have been easy for a decent writer to get the barb against M-B cloth upholstery out with finesse.

By the way, I love cloth upholstery.
