Need A/C help!
I have a 2002 C230. Last week, my car started making noises kinda like someone threw a couple wrenches in a dryer. I assumed the tensioner was going, but it didn't sound quite like any tensioner I have heard before. Fast forward 3 or 4 days and all the sudden the a/c stopped working and the sound got worse. By the way, it is the loudest when I start the car. It isn't as loud after a couple minutes and strangely isn't any louder at higher rpms.
A little more info, the system is pressurized, so no leaks. Also, there is no difference in sound or rpms between turning the a/c on and off, so the compressor isn't trying to turn on.
What I need to know is, does the a/c compressor have a clutch on this car or do I need to replace the compressor?

No clutch on the HVAC compressor. It is a swash plate compressor. Sounds as though the compressor might be damaged. Remove Poly V belt & check all accessories.
The Refrigerant must be at full pressure or the A/C wont turn on.

That's what I thought. Unfortunately, its our only car so I will need the parts to fix when I take it apart. Maybe I need to rent my wife a car while I fix it, ughhh..
