turn signal went out...BUT the bulb is fine...wtf
just this morning I walked up to my car to get to class the error message came up. I thought it was a glitch, so pulled out the key and restarted the car. Sadly it's still there.
The message says "check turn signal F, L", so I did. The front turn signal indeed is no longer blinking, BUT when I checked the bulb, it looks fine. Not burned out or anything.
anyone has experienced this problem?
damnit, now I need to find time to get it fixed...

FrankW : I had this problem two times already and at that time I was hooked up by the SA for changing the bulb for me. However, at the second time, finally the SA said that there was a regular problem with the early C-class, so he changed for me under warranty. Unfortunately I'm not really sure what is the part that he changed. So I think you need to talk with the SA, so s/he might change the part for you too.
Hope this help

thanks for the info guys...
i'll probably bring the car to the dealership near my school next week instead of where I got the car near my house. I'm gonna go try something to see if I can get it working...

I had this problem also about 2 months ago. It was the right front turn signal. I also removed the bulb and it looked fine, although I tried to find a new one but the store was out. Anyway, I put the bulb back and the next day the error went away. What's weird is, the bulb was not blinking during the "error period". Sometimes a filament can break and come back together temporarily, but this bulb has now been working fine for at least 2 months.
Also, it just happened the other day with one of my tail lamps. I got the error message out of the blue. But, I didn't even take out the bulb -- when I checked, both tail lamps were fine. The next day the message was gone.

guess what...it's working now. It's the contact on the white plastic part that started to melt away. It's not very bad right so I've managed to clean off the burnt part and the signal is working properly now. I'll still take it in later on when I find time.
also "sort of" cleaned the engine bay while I was doing this...lol

the next time I bring the car in I'll have them check both front and tail lights.

This is a known problem by MB for earlier models. Your SA
should not question anything and replace the wiring harnesses
both sides if your car is within that era. I thought there
was TSB on this, cant find my paperwork right now sorry.

crackerm is right, MB will replace your wiring harness for the trun signals, I think that when they did it to mine they did a cheap fix job. They took the wire out of the harness and ran it directly into the light, then they ran a new ground. It looks cheap if you ask me. I think that it is a grounding problem inside of the headlights, and instead of them ordering and putting in new headlights they fixed it the cheap way. Oh well I have the paperwork from the dealer saying they did this, so if there are any problems with the wiring, new car maybe?

Crackerm was right..this IS a known problem with the connection at the bulb socket.
Also, remember that our cars switch to the next available bulb (on both sides) when a critical bulb goes bad....ie: if your left rear brake light goes out, both sides will use the rear running lights as brake lights until you replace the defective bulb, then it returns to normal.
(I guess this is to save embarrassment of having a toasted bulb...and the ticket that might follow)

Accually your dealer will install a new wireing harness seperate from the main headlight harness.
It's just a ground harness, becuase the ground tab on the headlight housing will burn up, not damageing the headlight ist self, but then there is no ground point.
Usually once one goes out them you get home from the dealer and the other side goes out.

My family has a 2001 and a 2002, and yes this happened on both.... the service guys replaced the harness on both sides... nasty dice & splice job but now no more problems.
...except that now I am the proud owner of a handful of turn bulbs

I had this problem and posted about it a while ago. I replaced the bulb and it still did not work. I went to the dealer it was the wiring harness. They replaced both sides since it was such a common problem.
