auto transmission fluid line popping out

Hi guys,

As the title states, the automatic transmission fluid line leading up to the radiator (both lower and upper) keeps popping out. It happened once after a long road trip and now it happens all the time. The upper hose will pop out more often than the lower. Fluid level was checked/replaced a few months back. it's a bit hard to check the fluid level now because the moment I start the engine, the upper line pops out. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Make sure the line is pushed all the way in. Make sure the metal retaining clip is holding the line in. Once installed make sure the line can't pop back out by yanking on it. After my uppper line popped out once, I lock wired it in.

As far as I can tell, they're both fully pushed in. When I give a quick tug, it seems secure. If I pull with moderate strength, I can get it to pop out which isn't comforting.

Thats not good. Do you see a metal clip that goes over the line at the radiator. That clip needs to be there in order to secure ATF line to the radiator.

Its interesting to see this happened to someone else as well. The previous owner of my car had the radiator replaced and when the ATF cooler line popped out I assumed the guy simply failed to push it all the way in. Now I'm not so sure. Either way, A bit of wire to tie the line to the plug where it goes in will ensure it never pops out again. Its cheap insurance anyway for a **** design. On older Benzes (this is my 5th and newest MB) the ATF pipe screws into the radiator so theres no chance of it ever popping out. The quick connect design on the W203 is garbage.

I'll try and take a pic tomorrow but its pretty self explanatory. You use wire to secure the ATF hard line to the port on the radiator so it can't pop out anymore.

I couldn't get a clear shot of the lower line so this is the upper. They're both identical. You'll have to do the lower line from below the car. Take a peace of wire and tightly wrap it around the large diameter port (behind the clip) on the radiator side, take another piece of wire and tightly wrap it around the ATF pipe, then twist the 2 wires together. Its not pretty and its a PITA to work on your back with needle nose pliars but it works. My car also got a replacement radiator from the previous owner so thats where the fault lies I guess. On my car the upper line was popping out so I would do both the upper and lower at the same time.

Thanks for the image. It still looks like there would be a possibility of it coming loose. Just not off...

Yes but it won't pop out completely and make an oily mess of the engine bay. Worst care scenario it'll be a slow drip. The O ring on the hard line is pretty far in there so even if it moves out a little bit it won't leak. This connector is a really stupid design. On older MBs like the W124, W210 the hard line has a giant nut around it that screws onto the radiator. MB got cheap here.
