Trouble programming garage door opener

OK, I read the manual (a few times) but still can't get the integrated garage door opener to program. I held the portable transmitter approx. 2 inches from the rearview, pushed the button on it and the rearview at the same time, but the rearview lamp never started blinking, just a solid light. Tried that a few times, and later pushed the smart button on the main unit, but still no function from the rearview. The opener is a Lift Master, maybe 7 years old. I would think it's new enough to work but no luck. Any suggestions?
Thanks

They are tricky, there are two ways to do it. The easy way is to call MB with your handy dandy Tele-Aid or a cell phone and have them send someone to your house. They will do it for you for free. The hard way is to actually read the manual for the opener. Your problem is that you are trying to teach your car how to open the door when the reality is that multi code openers have to learn the code from your remote. There's usually a learn button on the side of the opener. Push that in while you push on the button on your mirror. More info is at the homelink website.

Buellwinkle, question

Hi Buellwinkle
so they actually send someone over to program for you? I bought my car at Laguna, but am at SF now, and if I call the SF dealer, they will be able to send someone right away? I actually think the dealer at the Laguna is A LOT more friendly than SF/Oakland dealers. At least here, no free car wash, cookies, nor soda...

Please let me know.

thanks

When programming mine, I had to hold the remote button and the mirror button for about 3 minutes before it started to blink fast. After that, the remaining steps only took about another minute.

Import
My opener was 15 - 20 years old, and refused to cooperate, so I ended up getting a new unit for the door, and new remotes for the other car (for something like $60 - I'm not sure how that's cost effective after just getting a car). Setting the transmitter then took about 30 seconds! It seems the signal band on older units is quite wide, not very specific like the new stuff. Good luck!

You can be as far away from your home as you want but you can't be more than about 50' away from the garage door opener. You need two people to do it. Did you call Teleaid yet?

Leepolun,
That is what my dealer told me to do. Call them on TeleAid and have them come over on a service call. I figured it out myself after a few hours so I didn't call them. It can't hurt to call and ask.

When I programmed the HomeLink, I could not get it to work until I actually used the other (my wife's) remote. Weird, because both remotes operate the door. it was the same for my Volvo.

Finally got it to work.

I had to hold the buttons down for about three solid minutes, but it started working. I didn't relaize that the key had to be in Pos 1 or 2 for the door to operate after the rearview had been programmed, but now I'm in business. Thanks guys!
