Clunking under braking

Hi,

I have a c200 kompressor 2003 and have noticed a loud continuous clunking/knocking noise when I break. Sounds like its coming from the front drivers side. Its quite sporadic and seems to be worse on bumpier roads.

Any ideas?! I don't know anything about car mechanics if you haven't guessed already and don't want to start getting mechanics to start swapping things out without results (had this previously with knocking sounds on previous cars) although I understand troubleshooting needs to take place it gets expensive!

Cheers

Check to see if the caliper has come loose.
If you've ever had your rotors replaced, it's necessary to unbolt the
calipers. I noticed something like this once while driving, jacked up the car, pulled the wheel and
yeah, damn it they were loose. Made a clunking sound.

I hadn't used thread locker....should have.
if anything, pull the wheel and poke around, look for anything loose.
Might be the shield on the back too. Sometimes they break away and rattle/ clunk.

Thank you for this! I will pass this on to the mechanic to check for me! Apart from the knocking noise - the brakes seem absolutely fine, they are pretty new so what you are saying makes sense.

Not sure, but you might as well take a look to the front sway bar bushings while you're at it. In your case, the driver's side.

Update in case anyone cares! ended up taking it to a garage and new find it to be a warped hub flange! swapped that out alongside a suspension arm and so far so good!

Glad you found the problem.

Didn't see this thread until now but my money would've been on a control arm. The W203 seems to chew through these, with almost all of my failures happening at the ball joints. They only seem to last 3-5 years. So much for quality German engineering.
