My cluster was faulty and below 45 deg F would cause limp mode. Dealer had car for a week to catch it in the act (not much very cold weather here) and pulled the codes indicating a faulty display. Cluster replaced, all fixed.

W203 slightly modified
I dont think it is the LCD component as such, it could be a self-test failure meaning it cannot go to sleep and will forever cause CANBUS problems.
Communication between the cluster and the rest of the car is very important to the information systems used by the driver and also to prevent flat batteries. A bad temp sensor will flatten the battery.

Quite ironic.
If the display was faulty, wouldn't it be blank?
Certainly unable to declare it's faultiness!
Am the only one who finds this amusing?
Oh the irony...

Well actually, the display would flag all kinds of faults and alarms that were false. But only below 45 degrees. The fluorescent part would fade out gradually with increased temperatures, that's irony for you.
Wasn't a cheap fix, but car no longer goes into limp mode.
