I need to correct my post from almost two years ago.
After my DIY attempt at installing the hitch didn't meet with success, I returned it to the seller for a refund. I continued to look for solutions that would permit me to transport bicycles with my C230. I visited a local shop that specializes in trailers and hitches. The technician checked the car and reviewed the product material on Curt hitches. He told me that they thought he would be able to install a Curt 11824, but that he might need to modify the bumper by cutting a small notch in it to accommodate the hitch.
I decided that I could live with a small cosmetic change in the car. I ordered another Curt 11824 and brought it to the shop. The technician was able to install the hitch without modifications to the bumper. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to talk to the technician when I retrieved the car. I don't know whether the technician applied any "tricks of the trade" to make the hitch fit.
While I'm disappointed that I couldn't DIY this job, I'm pleased with the outcome. I think the hitch is fairly unobtrusive. My bike rack fits well in the hitch.
