Does my C240 W203 need a catalytic converter?
A month ago, I bought a C240 W203 Year 2002. However, when I took it for the first service the Mech told me the car does not have a catalytic converter. First of all, I wonder why it does not have it. Anyway, he says the car engine will be quieter from the inside when driving (The engine noise is actually audible from inside the car). He also says the car will perform better with the converter. Please advise whether it's worth incurring this cost and any benefits of fitting the converter (I understand a used converter will cost me like $350 from here).

Besides being better for the environment, the car should also run better since the car measures things like O2 content before and after the cat. I'm wondering how your car can currently run without a CEL if the cat is missing.
I imagine having a cat won't affect the engine noise. I also assume that the previous owner didn't remove the muffler.
