Axle removal for a Starter replacement?
Hi, normally I do all my own repairs but this time I sent my 2005 c240 4matic to a very reputable shop for a starter replacement.
Prior to sending it i did a fair amount of research into the process of doing the replacement and I never saw anything that involved removing one of the front axles but the shop is saying this is part of the job. Has anyone else ran into this?

It was probably remove the entire exhaust per the factory but your tech knew removing the axle was a better shot. Exhaust systems get brittle and full of surprises after so many heat cycles.

4matic's I usually pull the exhaust to do the engine mount on that side, so the starters BASICALLY there. That checks out. The axle removal isn't as brutal as you think it is. On a good day it's sub-hour to me... and boy do 4matic cars involve pulling that specific axle for like 3-4 different services.
