Where is your thred?

Im only at 9k mi. and i have to replace the rear two tires at 300 each. I admit I drive hard but... 9k mi? Is this normal? Whats your milage and how much tread is left?

Says in your side bar you have the 18'' AMG's..and to that I say welcome to the world of low profile tires.

something wrong.... what kind of tires you have.... ??? Pirelli or Michellin or Continental??
:nix:

Man this has me scared!!!

I have the continentals. I really hate to think I'll be putting on tires before lease end.

I drive like the Stig and at 9K my Contis 18" tires are 50% at least and I'm probably being conservative on my guess. You must be doing burnouts and such because I vouch to be likely the most spirited driver in here. I rail every on/ off ramp I can etc...

I hit corners hard but I dont do burnouts. I just drive aggresive, had no idea that the tires would die out that quick. Continental is what I have. The shop said i had 1mm of useable tread left. and I thought i read some where you cant do burnouts with the c300 even with the ESP off? Or am I just making this up?

Get some Pirelli Pzero Nero M+S. I had a set that lasted 30,000 miles and wore very evenly. I think they are superior to Contis. I'll be getting them when my Contis go. The price is better too.

OK so if you have 1mm of useable tread that means there is about 3/32 left of meat, if I were you I'll get me a tire tread gauge and messure the tires my self.

Are they worn evenly? A tire can tell a nice story if you know what to look at.
It could be something major with the tire balance, pressure, alignment etc.
It's all in how the tire wears.....
IMHO 9K miles is a bit too low even with AMG rims. MB would never put on tires that only last 10-15K miles. This isn't a Porsche people.

I thought they were only expected to last 12 - 15,000 miles.

^ That would make more sence for me atleast. I drive hard so 9k instead of 12k is easier on the mind :)

I just checked tirerack ... 280 tread wear index which isn't that bad for a max perf summer tire.

What kind of road conditions?

CarGuru how are your fronts holding up?

I'm at about 6k, but I'm mostly doing commute stuff and slipping and sliding around in the rain (I think conti3's have awful wet traction below 40F ... but what can you expect out of a summer tire? :nix:) and mine don't even look scuffed yet.

I'm hearing from the tire shops that they've switched from the penny test to the quarter test effectively doubling the minimum tread depth ... and while I have no doubts this increases consumer safety in deep rain, it also, perhaps coincedently, increases tire sales. I'd give them a look over myself before I bought into the tire shop's analysis. But I'm also comfortable driving well into the molded in wear bars.
