Hands free phone sucks.

We thought this bluetooth, hands free phone thing would be awesome. But it sucks. Whenever I call the car and honey picks up all I can hear is myself talking. I can still hear her but there is an echo of myself before she talks. Everything I say I have to hear again. Its very annoying. It seems to happen all the time no matter who is calling. The person inside the car hears everything is fine, She doesn't hear any reverb or echoing like the caller does. Its only the person calling the car. Is it something with the phone? Is the software not compatible? She has an LG VX9400. Crappy phone, but it has bluetooth so it should be fine. It always connects fine.
Anyone else experience this and what did you do to correct it?
Thanks

Here's a pic of the phone:

Oh, bye the way...we asked the tech guy at the dealership and he said its probably just the carrier. She has Verizon and I doubt its verizon's fault because it happens to everyone that calls her, Verizon and cingulair and land lines I think. I may have to double check on that though.

Check the center A/C vents. Are they pointing up? This is a regular cause of "background noise" because the BT mic is located directly above the vents.

Also, not all phones are the same. If you have a crappy phone, chances are you're gonna get a crappy connection.

My partner and I both use iPhones on both our MBs and the sound is excellent. We had BT on my old BMW and MB's is much better; close to perfect, actually.

The 2 of us that drive our new C300 both have blackberry's. (One from AT&T and one from Verizon) and they BOTH give us sporadic issues with echoing for the person calling. I have been on the receiving end before and let me tell you, it is bad enough to hang up.

Thanks for the air vent tip, I will check that next time....although out here in MN, they merely are heating vents (vs. A/C) for the next few months.

Try a lower sound level setting in your car. Echo feedback is often caused by the mic hearing the sound of the conversation and sending it again.

With my blackberry there are zero quality issues. I have been using the phone daily and have not experienced what you are decribing. The quality is actually superb. My only issue is that I cannot download my address book and it really sucks

I am uning an older LG PM325 and have had excellent results with the bluetooth phone capabilities. It has always been clear on both ends of the conversation. You should try a different phone with your car to see if the problem changes.

it is an issue with your carrier. your phones might be be picking up the network properly which causes that echo. this happens sometimes with companies like T-Mobile and Cingular when the SIM cards are defective and cuases a relay issue with the cell towers. you hear echos, get delayed voice messages, delyed text messages, ect. Although Verizon doesnt use sim cards their phones can still have the same symptoms caused by the same thing (think of it as an "internal" sim card). i would have the phones checked out. issues like this should be covered under you warranty if you have had the phones for less then a year.

ps. i work for a cell phone carrier.

Are you calling the car over a VOIP land line?

From an observations point of view, its bad enough people look at you strange like you're talking to yourself when you're on a hands free device, but watching someone yell in their car, only to have a normal phone conversation - now that's funny! Your post reminded me of that Trigger Happy TV guy who yells into that HUGE cell phone in public places...

But on a serious note, I too have noticed my voice inside the car is a bit low as well. Wish the mic had some sort of sensitivity adjustment...

i kind of wish they placed the mic in a different place.. it's sort of blocked by the steering wheel.

perhaps they should have put it IN the steering wheel itself.. genius.

Thanks for the help guys. I don't think its the vents. I think she has the volume set to the highest level. We'll try a lower setting and see if that helps.

Never had a problem and I've had

BB Pearl
Moto Razr V3
Sharp Sidekick
HTC Mogul

no problems at all. Actually it's better than most bluetooth systems in the market.

I've had one at least one caller complaining to me about voice quality + I have two issues with bluetooth with my Nokia 9300i: 1. If I switch off the ignition in the middle of a call, it's completely disconnected, doesn't transfer back to my phone and 2. If I decide to press handset on my phone to speak privately, bluetooth retakes the call few seconds later, only way to keep it on phone is switch off bluetooth on the phone.

That's the problem, once in a while it happens to me too but once I lower the volume it goes away.
