The W203 is a great car but I def. had too much problems within the first year of ownership. Still love my old W202 but the car got old compared to the W204. IMO W204 is the best of all

man my first car was a W202, a 1994 C280. man that car was something, and not in good ways. lol it was small and ugly (in today's terms), 'nuff said.

it never broke down on me, and i cant really remember how it drove, but i guarantee my 204 is better in all ways. also had my first "real" accident in that car, airbags and everything

W203 measured to be superior in noise damping...

The following table (source: CAR) compares the interior noise of various entry-level Mercedes Benz C-class vehicles tested by CAR over the past 13 years:

Derivative Shape Engine Test published Noise in dB(A) at Idle, 120 km/h 80 km/h
C180 Classic W202 1.8 Nov '96 39 68 60
C180 Classic W203 2.0 Feb '01 38 64 58
C180 Kompressor W203 1.8 Dec '02 38 64 57
C180 Kompressor W204 1.8 May '08 39 67 -
C180K BlueEff. W204 1.6 May '09 35 69 -

Now which is the most NVH model? Clearly the W203!

Loved our W202 (1995 C280) as it was like old faithful. My parents are still driving their 10 year old W202 C200 in HK without mechanical problems. By year 7, the E36 was totally falling apart.

I think my W204 is the direct successor to the W202... solid, vault-like, dependable. It drives better than the softer W202, but that's not what an MB is really about, right?

Diesel Models

Hi Carsy,

For the diesel models I could find the following test data by CAR.

Derivative Shape Engine size Test Published Mechanical noise in dB(A) at Idle120 km/h 80 km/h
C270CDI AT Elegance, W203, 2.7, July 01, 43, 64, 58
C320CDI AT Avangarde, W203, 3.0, Oct 05, 44, 66, 62
C220CDI AT Avangarde, W203, 2.2, Nov 05, 45, 65, 61
C320CDI AT Avangarde, W204, 3.0, Mar 09, 38, 66, -

The lowest interior mechanical noise (excluding the measurement at idle - the 38 db(A) seems lyike a typo if you ask me) for the diesel derivatives is achieved by the 2001 C270CDI model! Once again a W203.
