Painted my grill and tinted windows on a red pano:
Painted the grill yesterday and the tint guys just left my house. I'm happy...don't know how long the paint will last vs rock chips and such, if it doesn't I'll just take it to a body shop to paint with a flat clear coat also.
I know, it needs a wash.

I 've never been the biggest fan of a red car but yours looks great! What tint is that on it?

I can not imagine it being any harder to break down than any other Mercedes-Benz PC/ABS part...just a bunch of snaps...
How did you prep the surface?
A.) Scotchbrite Ultra Light
B.) Sandblast
C.) Plastic Self Etch Prep
D.) Other?
Thanks,
Jake

Looks great! Not many Mars Reds out there. Pano/grill/tint looks great with the contrast.
How much for the tint? Didn't we hear you say that you're in N. California?

I live in S. FL and I got them done from a Mobile Tint service for $80, 20% all around film, highest quality with a 5 year warranty. Used them many times before with my other cars with great results.
I used 3M scuff pads to prep the grill. Taking it off wasn't too hard, I was just real careful to not break off any tabs, especially taking the chrome strips off. All in all (including paint drying and re-installing the grill) it took about 5 hours. After the 3M pad I just used rubbing alcohol and a micofiber towel to clean it.
Thanks for all the compliments guys. H&R springs should be installed this weekend, then I will order the carbon fiber trunk spoiler and keep working on my bug for a while after that!

From what I understand talking to my brother in law who's shop does professional tinting for multiple dealerships in his area, including mercedes, tints are basically separated into two types (metallic and ceramic) and from there three types (cheap 2 year, medium 5 year, and best 15 year) films. The years basically mean warranty meaning it'll most likely break down after that many years. That's the quality of the film.
Edit: actually, you could add a third category type to metallic and ceramic... reflective, which is a mirror like film and comes in different color options.

But even if you're not a relative, he's usually the cheapest price in town. I've heard people brag about they got this for this price, but when I ask him how much he'd charge, it's usually 25% cheaper. Heck, the tint I got I think he charges in the $150 ballpark range normally. When I helped host the MyMB meet, we rolled over to his shop (www.promaxms.com) and some of the members asked how much for some of the work was that they already had done (painted/vinyl roof, custom diffuser, etc) and found out they paid double what he would have charged.

Where's your bro-in-law's shop again? Maybe I should just look at the website, but I'm lazy. My parents moved down to the LA area, so next time I visit them, I could take a bit of a detour. I have a long list of cosmetic jobs in mind, and need a good, reliable body shop. More than price, I want quality (low price is a bonus!)

Wow. That is just wrong. Disgust boils within. My sister's bf is useless. The only thing he can do for me is... nothing. Worthless. Nice guy though.
