Anyone with the stock 17-inch wheels also experience scratches to the wheel nut wells? It sucks, but I guess I can't do anything now. Not sure which of my sockets did it, or maybe the mercedes stock wrench did. Anyway...

Also, I was cleaning my hub today, so I took a wheel off, and the lug nuts holes and around that area was all rusty. Is that normal? It's not even wet where I am. No cause for concern? Picture attached.

Finally, remind me of the torque for these cars? 92? Thanks!

I use a 17mm deep socket. Slips over the nut without wobbling and cannot contact the wheel.
Six inch extension
14 inch (or so) swivel bar

All 1/2" drive

All from Sears and not costly. Use the MB wheel wrench at your peril. The rust and crud on the hub is normal and of no concern.

Yep, I really screwed up ever using the MB wheel wrench (but the most damage happened I think when I had a tire get speared by a piece of wood, so I had to use the MB wrench (I guess I should stock something else in car). :( I get out my big torque wrench with the socket, extension, etc. and I can tell it doesn't do it.

Glad to hear the rust is ok.

Try this link. I bought these lug covers right away. Ours are 17mm.

I got a set of wheel lug sockets from one of my tool vendors (yes I am a mechanic/tech) They have a plastic shield around the socket so the don't scratch the wheels.

If you are referring to a Soft Socket, I have one and wore it out long ago.

The 17mm deep socket bottoms out on the shoulder of the nut and cannot touch the wheel.

the rust is normal...nothing to get worried about. take a steel brush to it to remove what you can before mounting your wheel again.

the rust on that picture looks like the wheel was lose, next time make sure to use a torque wrench, the tool provided by MB is only for an emergency.

No I have special sockets from Mac Tools and also ATD tools. No problems yet. They are a thin wall socket that gives more room around the outside of the socket for a protective sleeve. Griots Garage sells something similar as well.

I forgot to mention, the covers are so large, they hide the wells. :slap:

Rust normal - some is fretting corrosion - grease/coppaslip and torque wheels
