Trunk pops open by itself?

On a few occasions I have noticed that the trunk opens by itself, this has happened 4-5 times now, in almost all cases this would happen in my garage but 2 days ago I was parked in a mall parking lot (with two laptops in the trunk) and luckily they nothing was taken but now I am paranoid to leave anything in the car.

I already had MB look at this, but they could not find anything wrong. Does anyone else have any issues with the trunk popping up on it own?

Not a question i would come to mbworld with but your service department.
- just a tip :word:

Thats the point, just need to know whether it is an isolated issue (my car) or whether it is happening to other 204 owners because Mercedes service department cant find the issue

Not an isolated issue. I check my car each night before bed to ensure that the trunk lid is closed.

Um, there's a simple explanation: your pants pocket is too tight. Or you've got too much stuff in there! It doesn't take much for that button to be pressed, and then the trunk opens. Mine hasn't opened away from home because I check it as i walk away, and carefully stuff the key where it's not going to be pressed accidentally. But at night, well anywhere in the house that I tap that button, the trunk will open.

Wear baggy pants!

I think this is one answer. And, sometimes when I get and insert the key, my finger brushes across the key surface depressing the trunk release button just enough.......

So I unbelt, get out and slam it shut from the side.

its happened to me a few times when i have my key in my pocket...then i bend down to tie my shoes...POP...i'm pressing down on the trunk button.

Yeah that could be the issue, although the range of our remotes are not that great, unlike some of the remote car starter remotes.

my loaner C350's trunk doesn't open at night unless you use the metal key (key fob doesn't work, trunk release on the door doesn't work, and trunk handle release doesn't work either). now that's haunted. no issue with my 204 tho.

All of those openers except the blade key can be disabled by inserting the blade key and turning it 1/4 turn clockwise.

Every MB trunk release button going back to the year dot can be disabled in a similar way. Some you turn 180 degrees.

This happened to me just last week. I walked out to the garage in the morning and wondering why the heck my trunk was open...grrr.
Not an isolated issue.

They should make the key fob only activate the trunk release after you press it twice and hold. That's the way it is on my GL, that is a power tailgate though.

Spec_Davis 09-11-2008 11:18 PM

i think you guys had to bump or rub against something with your key to open the trunk....

yes, if that's actually the case.

Couple reasons come to mind

Not sure how feasable these are:

?Pants too tight? They would have to be REALLY tight!!

Kids playing with the FOB?

We don't have keyless go but, did you know that if you lock the doors with the trunk open, toss the FOB into the trunk then close it that it will pop back open?

Actually, as mentioned above, all you have to do is bend over to pick something up and it will sometimes pop open the trunk. The button is too easy to accidentally set off. And don't forget, there may be other things in that pocket.

Trunk wont stay closed on S550

Please don’t insult your intelligence by thinking those of us dress like you suggest or have the Common Knowledge to know if it’s because of something you have done before. When we have the key fob hanging up or wherever, (that it is not on said person) & it pops open while standing beside it then we can figure it out. Very helpful response & easily understood for others like yourself. Good Day to you my lady.
