Question 5 Speed Automatic. Some remarks.

Ok, so i drive a 200CDI, 5 speed auto.

I find the transmission not always very smooth,
mainly when driving at LOW speeds (city).

often you can really feel the car shifting gears
(car gets a little push).

All in all it shifts a bit Clunky i think.

is this normal, or a (known) problem?

my previous car had de DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) from VW,
and that really shifted gears without noticing anything!

I find the transmission very smooth in S and C mode. Even in M mode (with paddle shifts included) the changes are quick and soft enough, specially when you need to shift down.

Had the same problem, my dealer flashed my gearbox and the problem was solved by me.

if you want a double-clutch gearbox in a Benz, you'll have to buy an SL55 or SL63. About the cost of 4-5 VWs.

There's always the Carrera S, of course.

I can notice the 5 speed changing when feather footing around town but it seems to smooth out when driving with a little more pizzaz .

well it may not have a double clutch gearbox, but i did not expect a VW
to shift better than a MB...

Petje, i guess by flashing you mean
a software update?

got any more details on that?
want to be well prepared when going back to the
garage.

after all this is France... if it works sort of ok, it seems to be good enough for most... (de franse slag LOL)

I have found my 5-speed auto to be very clunky, particularly when the transmission is under load.

For example, if I nail it, then back-off throttle before it has shifted (rpm @5k for example, but now off the throttle), it seems to really thump in the next gear.

It has got better with more miles, but I think its very poor! Will ask about SW update at service in 6-weeks.

Don't know for sure about C, but GLK220cdi is featuring the 7Gtronic gearbox...question of time that our 5 speed box will be replaced.

Bonsoir Egon,

They have done a software update, and they "flashed" my transmission.

I heard it from another MB driver, and ask my dealer if they can "flash" my transmission, and they have done it.

So if you go to your dealer and say:

s'il vous plaît "flash" mon transmission , they know what you mean i think...

A bientot

The current 7 speed atx is a gem. It has torque converter lock in every gear, during moderate acceleration. All the benefits of a DSG type trans, but much smoother. Each gear is 100% engaged, just like a manual trans, or DSG (automated manual). I assume it unlocks at full throttle.

We tried the 5speed 4matic 2 years ago, and it was kind of a slushy feel with lots of converter slip.

Not happening. Engine is way too small for 7 gears.

Yup that was me who got this ECU and Gear box software updated. It now shifts really smooth. After the update use S mode for first 500 KM and then you can start using C as well. Gear shifts will be very normal and butter smooth.

DSG is probably the best gear box in the world right now. 7-G would probably be a closer fight against the DSG. But if you are comparing the 5S Automatic with DSG, I guess your observation is correct.
