Valentine One

What are your opinions on the V1? I'm considering to buy one, just wondering if anyone has one and how it's treated you? Hopefully this piece of gear isn't old news (ie. they're making some new funky lidar that is super hard to detect), evidently I know a laser shifter/jammer is the best protection, but I was wondering if anyone has had any good experience with the laser detection on this bad boy, since I'm in Vancouver and they have endless laser traps out here.

:nix:

wouldn't want to just buy a box that is just going to notify me that I'm 100% getting a fat ticket and does nothing else :smash: that'd be like 400$ down the drain.

C300Sport 12-12-2008 09:12 AM

I have been using a V1 since 1991 and have had very good luck with them until...LIDAR. My newest V1 has a lidar detector but I have said this many times now, it only lets you know a little sooner that you will be getting a ticket. Unfortuneaetly, LIDAR simply does not scatter enough (unlike RADAR) to give you any warning. If you have enough rays to set off the detector, the cop has enough to get a reading (This is true 99.5% of the time). It is really a losing proposition.

I have a V1 in my TL and it works great for RADAR, but as others have said it is just a ticket notifer if you get hit with LIDAR. I just installed the Escort SRX in my C63 but have not seen a cop running traffic sinceI had it installed to see if it works or not. I guess that goes to the old saying "there is never a cop around when you need one"
I am sure of I were to take the S2000 out which has not detector I would see a cop every 200 yards.

There are several threads discussed on the past about V1

RMR look promising, jams laser and radar... hmm looking online i saw something like:

HURRY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!!!!

The FCC is again trying to shut us down. This time they do state our RMR-C450 Phantom and RMR-S201 Phazer II units work; "intentionally interferes with a licensed radio service (police radar), and are indeed capable of interfering with police radar."

Interesting... I've only heard of the Scorpion radar jammer before... I'll do some more research. Any good sites for this stuff?

german-anger 12-12-2008 11:19 PM

Quick search concluded that RMR is a POS that doesn't work.. :)

Perhaps sticking with a V1 and a dedicated laser shifter is the answer...

Can't go wrong with a v1 :y

radardetector.net is a good site to learn about radar and lidar. However discussion of K40 is not allowed over there. I personally have a V1 and a Laser Interceptor. If Lidar is a threat in your area you definitely need a jammer. Laser Interceptor is pretty much accepted as the best jammer out there right now. guysoflidar.com has some good tests on jammers and detectors to check out as well.

You can get some early detection of laser from vehicles being hit directly in front of you, but not much. Remember that with laser, the police need line of sight to the target - learn to lift your field of vision when you drive, most drivers tend to focus only on the road directly in front of them. Also, this idea that "if your laser detector goes off its already too late to slow down" is not totally true, if you brake immediately, the fact that your speed is changing rapidly during the measurement period will force the officer to keep the beam on you longer to get a stable reading - so there is time for your deceleration to have an affect on the readout.

It near impossible to defend against laser at night without a diffuser. I don't drive over the speed limit at night anymore, its just to easy to get a ticket.

My Valentine 1 has saved my ass numerous times.... if it just saves you once with radar and it's worth the $400. For lidar (never heard that... that's a new 1 for me) get a jammer (escort i think makes a really good 1).... but is a felony if found in California... I'll just pay the ticket... thnx

Not sure if all Lidar models are like the one I got to take a look at earlier this year, but the ones the GA State Patrol are using will take a virtually instant read on your car. Even if you are emergency braking, it will display your speed at the time of reading.
I have heard a lot of things about laser and radar jammers(from owners and troopers) and it seems most work marginally at best. I have basically gotten like you and just slowed down a bit...although I do indeed have to blow things out every now and then.:zoom:

Good Grief, A FELONY! That is pretty crazy...likely a harsher penalty than armed robbery as well...

jicl55 12-13-2008 08:51 PM

just another "liberal" california law.... we might be the only state where it is a felony, I'm not sure, but I know it is here..... that's why I don't have 1..... I don't care how hidden it is..... on the chance they might find it.... i'll pay the stupid ticket (hopefully I'm just not going over 100 or that's a felony too) :slap:

I was gonna snatch one off craigs a couple days ago, but it got sold after my first inquiry email :( it was a really good price... :p

Those things do amazing work, but is it just me or do they look hideous in the car? :p:

"hideously purposeful" is how I like to describe it :)

Oh it's definitely an amazing machine. But you'd think they would design it to look a little nicer? It looks like it belongs in a 1980's police cruiser haha. I wanna get one but the only thing keeping me back is the looks :(

Didn't Night Rider have one?:nix:

Yes and no. Sure, the officer could use the first "instant" reading as your speed and leave it at that. But they also cannot be sure that the reading isn't changing because their aiming point on the car isn't stable. I've been lit up by laser many times, and notice that if I panic brake right away, the duration of the reading is longer.

Hideous? Well.....

if you are one of those who plugs a coiled cord into the lighter or power socket and then runs it straight up to the detector, then yes, it looks bad and reveals the low standards of the driver.

But, concealed wiring to the detector mounted up high to the right of the mirror looks OK.

My V1 with the latest software has perhaps saved me quite a few times. If you own one, you can go to the Valentine website, plug in your unit's serial number and the site will tell you what version software you have and whether it's upgradeable or not.
