Oil Filter
Is this a dealer only purchase or do I need to keep looking? Is there another model year that uses the same filter?

When I asked my service adviser what type of oil I should get to have a spare can on hand, he said 0W-40.
However, on my first oil change the mechanic used 5W-40 which I believe is 229.51. When I questioned the service adviser why 0W-40 was not used, he said that 5W-40 was suitable for both gas/diesel, while 0W-40 was good for gas only. I guess the dealer is using 5W-40 so that he doesn't have to stock two oil grades.
Mercedes can publish all the specs they want, but it looks like the dealer will do what's convenient/cost effective for him.

Mobil's 5W-40 Euro grade with 229.5 approval does not appear on the Benz approval list at present although it's possible that such a grade is imminent. Their previous 5W-40 products failed Benz HTHS (high temperature high shear) requirements so beware.

And, you can buy the very same filter the dealer uses in the aftermarket for a considerable saving.
My dealer is using 5W40 M1 but when I do the next and subsequent changes I will be using the readily available 0W40 from then on. I use a Topsider to suck the oil out the dipstick tube.

DYI oil change is super easy on the M272. Suck the oil out the top, change the filter and then pour oil back in. No jack needed and the whole thing takes just a couple minutes.
