Is it possible to upgrade to the new 2010 iPod software / integration?

I test drove an E350 coupe this week. It had the iPod integration kid. I plugged in my iPhone to test it out and was amazed to see ALL the iPod information on the COMAND screen - playlists, artists, etc. etc. This is the one thing I cannot stand about my 2008's iPod integration. I hate having to rely on the minimal info given inside the speedometer.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to upgrade to this new system so the iPod information would appear on my 2008 C350's COMAND screen? Would it be a matter of simply upgrading software, of would an entirely new integration kit have to be installed?

To do this, you need to install the UCI (Universal Consumer Interface). This is officially NOT a retofit item, but it can be done. Theres the interface module, some wiring to do and then it needs to be coded.

The coding can only be done by a dealer with the Star machine. They will have to send the correct option code to MB, they then receive a software update that is downloaded to the car, effectively switching on the module. You will then get ALL the info on the COMAND screen and can control it all from the controller. It will play video, USB sticks, etc.

Cost for this option os about £500 plus whatever the dealer charges for the coding. I doubt you will find a dealer who will retrofit this, as it is not a retrofit that MB officially offers.

OP already has MM, so UMI won't work for him..what he can do is order UCI and have someone or some shop retrofit the UCI kit for him and remove that crappy iPod kit..

Its not a massive DIY job to fit this, the main work is taking the trim parts off, there a little bit of easy wiring.

The main thing is you will have to go to a dealer for the coding, or it will not work. There is no way of activating the UCI without dealer coding.
