Get VIM by doing a Hard Drive Hack

I know this was brought up a long time ago, but I just wondered if anybody here has used the hard drive patch to enable VIM like these guys did succesfully in this mitsubishi forum with the same COMMAND head unit?

"As I was the 'beta tester' for this, I confirm it works with my MMCS DVD playback while the vehicle in motion now works, with no cutting of any wires, and no losing of any navigation functions!

Note: the patch is for the NR-261UM models. If you have the NR-261EM model, send it to Otaku so he can make a patch for you.

Quick installation instructions:

* Follow rcostin's instructions for removing and unlocking the hard drive here: http://www.mitsubishiforum.com/m_208034/tm.htm

* Extract the RAR file in the above post

* On the "HDD3" partition (the one with the file "Loading.kwi"), make a backup copy of the original loading.kwi and keep it in a safe place.

* Execute the patch from the RAR file to patch the loading.kwi file.

* Before reinstalling the hard drive back into the MMCS, disconnect the (-) battery cable for about 2 minutes. This is necessary to "cold" boot the MMCS to get it to load the new firmware. (pulling the appropriate fuse might also work).

* Reconnect the battery cable and put the hard drive back in the MMCS.

* Close the screen and turn the ignition key back to ACC or "ON".

* You will see it do a version up, then a screen check. After a few moments it should restart and be back to normal operation.

* Stick in a DVD and go for a test drive!

It should work for us too on our MM system if we duplicate everything exactly, correct? Anybody tried this?

Sorry in advance if this doesn't work for our cars or has not been done yet....

interesting.. who wants to be the first to try??!

yes and after the first person has the balls to take out the hard drive and get the necessary files from the unlocked drive, there are instructions in that forum that are show how to make an autoloading update CD that you just pop in and it updates the firmware automatically to allow VIM with no additional hardware :)

if only we had someone here with the know how to get this done for our version of the command...:nix:

If you know a tech and they are willing to go into the Prohibited Menu, they can use DAS to delete the 5kmph limit on Video, i am told -

however, I am too checking to do the Hard Drive hack. If I had two Commands, i might be tempted though.

smikes19 09-10-2009 11:23 PM

Hmm...I think i'll take a stab this weekend.

tchockie 09-11-2009 01:47 AM

do it!:y

Robbio204 09-11-2009 01:49 AM

possibly groundbreaking moment in w204 mbworld history,
get it done Lol

Mr. Whiskerz 09-11-2009 03:47 AM

let me know if it works :)

kurosen 09-11-2009 10:28 AM

I'm a computer tech and I've got all the necessary tools to do this, but I have no idea where in the W204 the HDD is located. If someone could tell me where the drive is and how to gain access to it in order to pull it out, I would happily give this a shot and attempt to create a firmware flash disk for everyone else. :)

smikes19 09-11-2009 10:31 AM

I believe its on the backside of the unit, as opposed to the Mitsu's who have an access panel in the front by the CD slot.

It is very easy, a long as you are able to remove the comand from the dash. On top of the command unit there is a door, you unscrew the screws and you take out the hdd caddy. similar procedure like in a laptop. The only difference, a laptop has the hdd door in the bottom of the laptop, whereas the command has the hdd door on top side of the command. :) I hope this helps.

Interesting... I'll have to speak with the guys on the Mitsu forum and ask for help with a patch for our version of MMCS... Can a few of you go into the ENG menu and find what loader version(s) you have? Unfortunately, I'm not near my car now to check :(

We will most likely need to change the byte string for the unlock since we probably have a different loader version.

EDIT: It looks like we're late to the party. Otaku from the Mitsu forums already found the passwords to unlock our HDDs!

The HDD passwords are :

and

Kurosen, please keep us posted! We hope that you crack this soon! :y

Mr Enigma 09-11-2009 02:03 PM

+1.

I'll be interested to see what happens!

Savage c-300 09-11-2009 02:12 PM

Oh my god, I think I'm getting chubby.

kurosen 09-11-2009 02:14 PM

I'm relying on what Otaku has already accomplished, so props should go to him, not me :p

I'll try taking out the HDD and unlocking it over the weekend. If successful, I'll attempt to extract the loading.kwi file and speak with Otaku about his patch to see what may need to be changed. He has already made a viewer that is compatible for our loading.kwi files here:

Last Update [ 00:21 21/05/09 ]
And another rewrite..
I think I'll have to rename this beast - it now handles Mercedes HB2 update files.
Think I have region-free on Mitsus done now.
Also means I should be good to go for region free & dvd-in-motion on certain Mercs ( the w204 for one )
I've also just picked up one of the units for me to play with - finally some hardware! W00t!
Has something for the w204 already been done?

iatacs19 09-11-2009 03:00 PM

Will this help us change the system so we can enter addresses while the car is in motion?

kurosen 09-11-2009 03:01 PM

I'm still waiting on a response from Otaku. After doing a little research, it looks like a miniIDE to USB adapter won't work with unlockhd. If otaku responds before I leave the office today, I'll borrow one of the older laptops from the office and use that to attempt the unlock.

As for entering addresses while in motion, it should definitely be possible if we can get VIM working... just another tweak of loading.kwi

This is all very preliminary work guys, I'll keep you updated ;)

in the link at the top of this thread, there are instructions to remove the hard drive... let me know if u cant find them and i will post a direct link

edit: nm, see u found them...

man, if you can crack this soon, i probably will sell the VIM module I just bought from Midcity and not install it...

i knew the day would come eventually, but i have been waiting almost 2 years and i finally found a great deal on a vim module

if someone does try and fails, id recommend sharing with people the original loading.kwi file as that is the key to getting this to work. chances are the patch needs to be slightly modified for the comand's loading.kwi file.

Yup - I have a copy of the loading.kwi from an NTG2.5 High unit ..
Its slightly different from the Mitsu version : yours is CE5/Automotive , theirs is 4.2.

I think I've identified a couple of useful points to patch, the current problems are - I have no details of the standard upgrade method, and it's Skin based ( I'm working on decoding this proprietary format )..
Is it just a case of popping a dvd in, and the unit updates itself as it is with the Mitsu ?

O.

Ahh - Scratch that - I was looking at the wrong Merc code ..
The 204 _is_ ce4.2..
The patches for DVD-in-motion are functionally similar, they're just in a different module..

smikes19 09-12-2009 12:14 PM

Otaku, does that mean that the patch for the mitsus definitely will not work for the w204?

The map updates are done via DVD. But I'm not sure how the OS updates for the comand are done.

Heh - you'll need a different patch for the 204..
Hrmm - anyone got one of the update DVDs lying around ?
