New Comand FW upgrade.

Upgraded my Comand firmware today, nothing big really but a lot of smaller upgrades and improvements such as extended TMC features, improved AUX functionality, smaller bugfixes i navigation software and more.
Also map layout is alightly altered, freeway and street info looks a lot better and, the daytime "sky" in 3D-mode is now covered with clouds and at night the sky is starry :)

Took a good 40 mins to install

woedee 10-12-2009 03:04 PM

This is good news. I am hopeful that this fw upgrade will enable traffic info for US COMAND (w204 my 08-09). Vic, when I goto the dealer to get this upgrade, is there a dtb/tsb # I need to reference?

cbcharlie 10-12-2009 03:08 PM

i'm assuming this was done at the dealership? is there any version info you can give us so we know if we have the latest or not?

kurosen 10-12-2009 03:16 PM

A firmware upgrade you say? Any chance you have the disc that the firmware was done with? We've been trying to unlock VIM via disc on another thread, but I myself have not made much progress, even after a forum member ghosted his HDD for us.

vic viper 10-12-2009 03:21 PM

Yes, I have the disc, however you need the diagnostic tool to enable the upgrade itself, most likely for backup reasons, I tried to insert the disc without connecting Xentry with no luck.
But I will bring the disc home tomorrow and see what I can find on it.

EDIT: remember that that I do not know if this upgrade is available on the US market, could be a totally different story.
I dont think its possible to see the FW version before this upgrade, but one of the upgrade features was that the version numbers would be viewable for the user.

kurosen 10-12-2009 03:46 PM

Vic, that is really great news! Please feel free to contact me at kurosen *AT* gmail *DOT* com

I can help you pull the contents off the disc and this could give us a fresh new lead!

Richard2011 10-12-2009 03:53 PM

How do I find out what version I have and what is the latest version?

vic viper 10-13-2009 02:18 AM

All right, I now have the disc in my work computer, seems like the updates are split into separate folders such as, DAB, HU, SOUND and UCI.

The disc is about 500mbs anyone know how and where to upload it?

icio67 10-13-2009 08:43 AM

Sorry Vic but it is the 08/09 v 4.1 or the 09 v 5.0?

mingo 10-13-2009 10:23 AM

i wonder if the update can be done through the engineering menu without the star diagnostic tool

Here's a step by step for extracting all the contents in a disc to an ISO file.

1. Go to this link and download the program imgburn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

2. Install imgburn and run it

3. Insert the disc into your computer

4. Select "Create image file from disc" in imgburn

5. Press the folder button in the "Destination" area to tell imgburn where to save the ISO file to, and give the file a name (ex: firmwaredisc.iso)

6. Press the button in the lower left hand corner that shows a disc and an arrow to begin the ISO creation process

Once imgburn is finished, upload the file it created to a file hosting service like http://jumbofiles.com (or you can PM me and I can give you access to my FTP server), then copy and e-mail the link it gives you (when the upload is done) to whoever you want. I do not recommend posting the link openly on a public forum.

Please let me know if you have any difficulty with the process :)

vic viper 10-13-2009 11:36 AM

Of course I forgot the disc at work :wall:, but I will get it home tomorrow, then I can upload the image file to your FTP.

There is a sh_tload of different version numbers and codes, I took a crappy picture of the ones I thought is the most relevant:

There is an update option in ENG menu, which is looking for DVD in slot 1.

This disc may have LOADING.KWI which can help VIM hack that Otaku working on.

Bingo! That's what I'm hoping for. In any event though, a true firmware disc will be a huge step in making VIM-via-disc happen.

woedee 10-13-2009 01:19 PM

+1 re: pics of gui changes (star/clouds) please.

vic viper 10-13-2009 02:23 PM

I am pretty positive that there was a file on the disc named LOADING.KWI

btw here are some pics of the fullscreen navi map:

Notice small new features all the time, like 10 mins ago I noticed a large analog running clock in the root system menu.

woedee 10-13-2009 03:19 PM

Can you still see/access the backup cam option @ Engineering Menu? Also, any changes to ipod integration (select songs from COMAND menu)?

benyl 10-13-2009 05:01 PM

What is the date of this upgrade? My car was built mid-september and is on the train right now. Wondering if I will get this new version or not. Is the update part of the PDI process?

exdes 10-13-2009 05:18 PM

Vic, so you still have an older version of the nav update?

vic viper 10-13-2009 05:34 PM

what do you mean?

@benyl, do not know when this FW is equipped in factory cars, I recieved the update disc couple of weeks ago.
Then again this update is hardly a must have, the system works just fine without it, its just me wanting to have everything up to par, even if it doesnt benefit me in any way :)

BAPHA 10-13-2009 06:17 PM

So does that enable live traffic update for '08-09 models?

Arcoril 10-13-2009 06:49 PM

I'm still in the dark when it comes to traffic updates on the 08-09 US w204. So far I've heard the following:
  • MY 08-09 cars equipped with COMAND support TMC in the hardware, but the feature is disabled in the firmware for the US market.
  • MY 08-09 without COMAND but with a UMI retrofit support TMC and show real-time traffic updates.
  • MY 10 cars with COMAND show real-time traffic. It's not clear whether the traffic info comes from TMC or form Sirius, but Sirius is a requirement for COMAND in 2010.

So getting real-time traffic on MY 08-09 cars depends on a number of things:

TMC is enabled elsewhere in the world, but was left out of US cars with COMAND. Seeing as how it's enabled for UMI in the US, I'm hopeful that it can simply be enabled for COMAND-equipped cars via a firmware update.

If MY 10 cars are in fact getting traffic information over Sirius, getting this on 08-09 cars is dependent on whether or not a) your car is equipped with Sirius since it wasn't bundled with COMAND, b) the previous Sirius tuner supports real-time traffic data streams, c) the MELCO head unit is able to support this in hardware.

I'd love to have real time traffic on my 09. It just seems like a slap in the face that the less expensive Audio 20 + UMI combo supports TMC while COMAND doesn't.
