Air Turbulence Noise at Windows

I just discovered a new concern. It's 80 degrees here today, and driving above 40mph, it sounded like air was rushing in through an open window. All doors and windows were actually fully closed. When I got home and looked at the outside, I ran my finger along the underside of the black strip at the top of each window, just under the chrome molding, and 3 of 4 of them were warped with at least one or two "waves" standing away from the glass. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow, but it seems likely that this is the source of the noise. Anyone else have this condition?

Pictures of where exactly?

Here's the worst one. In the foreground is the B-pillar and you're looking at the top of the left rear door. Notice how the molding along the top bows out? I have this on 3 of four doors.

Someone may have said air turbulence noise may be related the mirrors' aerodynamics, but the mirror has no relation to the warping moldings at the top of the door. The new wind noise I hear is at the door top.

I took the car to the dealer this morning. They took one look and ordered replacement parts.

Good to know, let us know if it imporves or eliminates the issue

Will do, but everyone should just run their fingers under that top strip along the length of the door. I've never seen a material problem which only affected one car.

The picture you uploaded was unable to load for me, so I can't see where you are talking about. But I too hear wind noise when all my windows and doors are fully closed from my left ear. It sounds like it is coming from behind me at the passenger window/door, but I have not located from where yet.

I checked mine but don't have that issue. Having said that, I have road noise as well where i find myself pulling up on the window controls just to make sure I don't have a "gap" in the windows :nix:

O.K.......stand at the side of your car looking directly at the side windows. There is a black rubber strip which runs along the top of the window. Run your finger under that strip, right where the glass meets it. The gap should be tight and uniform. Mine is warped and has bulges on 3 of the 4 windows.

My commute has kept me off the freeways for the most part but this past weekend I did a short trip and the road noise does seem way to loud on this car at higher speeds.

Time to consider dynomat insulation or look at another higher end model and see how they are as the noise is annoying.

that happed to my windshield.

Spec_Davis 04-21-2010 10:30 AM

i do check my windows to c if they r close and they are and still hear the noise from outside. what should we do go to the dealership n let them know?

billvip 04-21-2010 01:27 PM

Just back from dealer....took 4 hours to replace those top moldings on 3 doors where they had warped. The moldings apparently wrap much of the door and require substantial door dis-assembly. BUT, the results are great. The wind noise is almost gone, except for a little which is probably our older, larger side mirrors. Based on the difference, the old moldings were clearly defective.

Glad to hear you got it resolved, thanks for the update :y

Absolutely a warranty issue....part deterioration defect.

Sportstick,

I keep my 2008 C300 garaged almost all the time.

How does that compare to your situation.

I'm just wondering if the warpage was due to a lot of thermal recycling in a warm climate outdoors in direct sunlight.

That has me wondering as well. My car is garaged and the warpage occurred over a period when we were starting to transition out of winter to moderate early spring ambients, but nothing above 50s or 60s. The car never had a "heat soak" or prolonged static sun exposure. Given that warpage would be expected with expansion from heat, as the material pushes away from its design position, the fact that it happened under such mild changes seems to point to a material defect. It also only occurred on three of four doors...so far. I also thought about whether there was any interaction with window movement as the top of the glass is inserted or withdrawn from the top channel, but my rear windows are almost never cycled and my driver window is infrequently used. I am a ATC user. So, I cannot identify the true root cause.
