C350 exhaust resonator removal?
Has anyone had their center resonator pulled out of their exhaust and replaced with a straight pipe? If you have heard of anyone doing this please let me know. Thanks

I wanted to find a clip of straight but was never able to. Straight pipes cost WAY less to do, but beacuse of no clips and everybody saying it'll sound bad I went with x as well.

Can a shop fab up an x pipe? Or is it better to just purchase an x pipe? Also, any idea on the difference in sound without the res?

Also, does anyone know what the pipe size is? 2.25" or 3"? Also, I see that Magnaflow makes two different options. One is 12" long, and the other is 9". Does anyone know what option is the better way to go? Here are the links:

You can have a muffler shop fab you an x-pipe, but might not be the best in terms of performance or material quality. And you want 2.25" pipes.

2.5" will fit as well, they won't have to stretch open up the ends like they would with 2.25" pipe. Also AFAIK your going to need extension pipes anyways bc these magnaflow x-pipes are shorter (12") than the resonator which is like ~20" or something

Just FYI for anyone interested in doing the resonator delete to X Pipe mod. If you YouTube "C350 X Pipe" you will find a video from ExhaustDepot.com showing how they made a custom fit, bolt on x pipe for a C350. I emailed them and they said to make a custom fit all bolt on X pipe runs $175. Not too bad, considering its a bolt on and custom fit so there are no extra pieces of pipe needed and it is the correct length. Not to mention its a flanged end on the cat side so there is no cutting into the cats.
I am ordering mine today. I will post pics after its installed, in the mean time check out the video. Pretty impressive quality |

This is really a very simple and common mod so don't be afraid to try it. It will not void your warranty as anything cat back is fair game. This has all been covered once and I'm sure will be covered again. Get 2.25 openings, and any halfway decent muffler shop can take care of this modification for you. If they look at you confused when you tell them to replace your resonator with an x-pipe, find a different shop instead of explaining it to them. Also when they do cut your resonator, make sure you keep it so if you later want, you can go back to stock without having to buy a new resonator.

The stock resonator is essentially a big x-pipe but it has built in baffling in the walls to reduce sound waves. It takes the bit of growl we have stock and amplifies it a couple times. Idle sounds pretty much the same, 1500-4000 is maybe twice as throaty(my favorite) and around 4500 it can get pretty loud. You also get a nice burbly, poppy idle on cold starts...sounds pretty mean! The x-pipe is the cheapest easiest way. Anyhing aft of the cats is fair game and won't void the warranty. |
