Any Suggestions for Filters
I want to upgrade my air filters. I have used K&N, but I'm not that familiar with the other brands. Anyone have any experience with these?

I ran into problems with K&N, had to switch to Green Filters.

Problems with the MAF? I heard if they were "over-oiled" the oil would get sucked into the intake.
I was thinking about the AFE Dry or the Green. |
Yea I believe mine were over oiled. Had a stutter problem. The K&N's have been good for others.Greens have worked out good for me.

I do believe some members have BMC air filters which I would really like to order. I think BMC are the ones the Mercedes F1 car uses.

Is there a noticable difference with aftermarket filters on these cars vs. OEM filters?
|
ive been wanting replacement filters for awhile but i hear everyone saying a over oiled filter can mess up your Maf sensors. Whats the difference between the K@N, BMCs, Green, and AFE filters as people only mention the K@Ns having the over oiled problem but all those other filters require being recharged (oiled) to. Just curious as to what the difference/best is seeing as they all need to be oiled.

+1, whats wrong with the stock filters? I can't imagine filters doing anything special for a car, maybe modification to the air box, but that can get messy. Plus most of the replacement filters are more expensive than OEM...

AFE

Stock filters are a bit more restrictive than BMC, AFE, and K&N in allowing airflow in. They do a great job filtering out airborn particles and contaminants, but for those who are considering changing their filters, they want richer air mix to drive up the HP. By itself it's no miracle worker, but is a component of better intake. And as mentioned before, MB uses BMC filters for their C63 DTM race car instead of using stock filters and I'm willing to bet their performance analysts found credible evidence to justify the swap.

And yes, with K&N, there have been reports of oiled up MAF, but none from BMC that I know of. If properly oiled, though you shouldn't have any issue, but most people don't know how to properly oil their filters.
Also, these filters are washable so you're basically just buying filters once, not over and over with OEM Mahle throwaways. |
I've installed a K&N on every car I've ever owned and never had any problems. Just put one in my C300 a few days ago. I removed the charcoal filters as well.
Very easy. |

how much do these filters cost?? the ones AZN is talking about??
|
K&N are relatively cheap at like $30-50 each. BMCs around $100 each.
You'll need two filters though. |
Thanks for the info mike. You mentioned that by itself it's not a huge differnce. What else would you suggest to help the intake? I already got an xpipe ready to be installed in my car. I figure I should get all my eggs together before I do it though.

Unfortunately, nothing out on the market for us, except those hot air short ram intakes lol. C63s have that carbonios, but anything for us will have to be custom. Had some chicken scratch skeches on cocktail napkins of an intake with a fab buddy of mine, but nothing really came out of it lol. What you can also do is take about the airbox and dremmel down some of the restrictive baffling.

I just received my AFE pro-dry air filters and wondering if anyone here has them and your impressions? Any improvement in mpg?
How difficult to install? I've read the DIY and seems like a lot of effort to replace air filters in our C's...compared to all other cars I've owned that were very simple. Trying to decide if I should do this or have my indy do it at my 39K mile trans. service coming up. |
I have the AFE filters also have not noticed any mpg increase however I do not drive my car that much because I work in Manhattan. Installing the filters is a DIY project it takes about 30 minutes to do.

Use OEM Filters. Hassle free an zero preocupation.
