Auto Trans Rear Seal Replacement Question

I have a couple of months to go before my car is out of warranty so did an complete inspection .

There is a slight weep from the 5 speed 722.64 rear auto box seal The MB mechanic will change it out in the coming weeks.

I am interested to know what is involved in changing out this rear shaft seal ?.

ie Does the GB as a whole come out?.
Is the oil drained out completely. ?

I my experience in heavy engineering if a new oil seal leaks there could be:-

Problems with the seal manufacture/ quality.

Shaft misalignment or runout.

Burrs , roughness or poor machining on the running faces.

Comments welcome.

Carsy - it's a minor replacement and not common

Thank you Glyn. I am relieved that it is not a large operation. I hope it does not re-occur outside warranty.

Very little chance - mine is bone dry after 7 years. Had the car serviced last week & we did the transmission flush & filter change. It is not a common leak. Obviously get the mechanic to just check the prop flange seal running surface for a nick or whatever. I think you just got unlucky. The 722.6 is a mature transmission & will do huge mileage trouble free if serviced every 60,000Km. I mean 600,000 to 800,000Km comfortably from experience.
