in need of automatic climate control clarification
New Benz owner in need of clarification
does the AC come on automatically when in auto mode?
when I first got the car it didn't and now it is. I thought I read in the manual that the AC had to be selected manually.
can someone please clarify this for me

At least in the 2010, when the system if off and you hit Auto, AC comes on automatically. If you turn AC off, and then leave your system on and shut off the car. Every time you start the car, AC will be how you left it -- off or on. But if you turn Auto off and then back on, AC comes on automatically.
Maybe its the same in 2008?

I discovered the following, not sure how well known it is....
As post #2 pointed out correctly, there is another twist. Press auto and the system is in full auto mode and the A/C compressor is activated. Press A/C off and the system remains in full auto but does not have the compressor active (winter when only heat is needed and it's not too humid).
Press 'Off', system shuts off. Press 'Off' again and the system activates as you left it - in the way that I like, full auto but no A/C activated. Prevents having to press 'Auto' to have full auto along with a brief A/C compressor engagement.
Maybe not so intuitive, but I like the option. I tend to hate unnecessary wear and tear.
