Honestly, I think you could probably make the same thing out of parts from Home Depot plumbing department...Just a flexible tube that you attach to one end and and find someway to stage the other end somewhere without any mounting points to support. None smooth inner portion can also contribute to some baffling. Doesn't even come with the filter cone.

I dont think the oem intake can get much better? unless a company comes out with a design kinda like the c63 intake, but then itll be around $1000.

Basically. The only real improvement you can make is more breathable filters and remove some of the baffling in the airbox. You could smooth out the stock tube though with a solid metal/plastic piece, but then that makes removing of the cover a bit more complicated. Open air RAM systems just soak up hot air, but you do get some noise aesthetics, just no performance benefit.

I got the same setup on my dryer at home LOL. There is nothing out there that is better than the stock intake, its actually a ram air setup sort of. I would bet money that anyone who has done a cone setup or a DIY intake has actually lost HP especially at highway speeds. bmc filters are a nice addition to the stock exhaust, you cant really do better without some custom pipe bending and fabrication work

I've been toying with the idea of fabricating scoops which would take advantage of current setup. That's about the only thing extra I'd think about doing now to make the oem setup any better.

I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago while playing w my car. My idea was to fab up a small intake box to connect behind the grill the length of the upper grille to force more air into the dual inlets. The only thing I see wrong w the MB setup is the actual intake into the block. I dont know who here has removed the actual motor shroud but in the back of teh block the plastic intake behind the filters is a single inlet with wire mesh over it that distributes the air into the manifold. Theres too many bends going back and curved back forward, the air intake should have been in front for a shorter distance for the airflow. And the dual plastic intakes are ribbed sort of, smooth is better for less turbulent air flow. The ram air setup could have been refined a bit and definitely added some punch to highway pulls at the least. I think anybody doing a DIY intake kit on it without removing the stock air filters fromt he box u would make this engine starve on air and wouldnt breathe well, and definitley lose HP. Someone needs to make a small belt driven charger or pulley driven fan for the intakes, I would definitely lose my engine cover to boost the ponies up

looking at the factory intake, it seems that the bottleneck is on the engine cover. The T-junction where both ram air intakes meet to enter the throttle body gets very small & narrow.

First, the crank case is sealed as part of the emission system as designed and required by law so venting to the atmosphere is illegal. And if this were done, the check engine light comes on.
Try running the engine briefly with the oil filler cap off or the dipstick out.
