If your car is not a 4matic, then chances are its the 6 speed (I don't know the internal code for it), unless it has the optional 7 speed which is what this thread is about.

You could tell by down shifting with your shifter and then up shift consecutively until the the number next to D is gone. If the last number you see is a 5, you must have the 6 speed, if the last number you see is a 6, you have the 7 speed.

edit: True, the vin would probably be the most reliable way, I believe there is a Mercedes vin decoder website somewhere out there.

Six speed auto, you say. Must be the only one on the planet.

The 2012 facelift models are certainly available with Stop-Start & the 7G Tronic Plus should be fitted to all cars with the new M271 Evo Turbo engine & the new M278 60 degree V6. You will note new owners talking about S & E mode with default to E.

I can't comment on runout models to the US.

EDIT: Yes - fluid change every 125,000Km's instead of 60,000Km's (they say 50K in the article but 60K has been the global norm). We will see how this works out in reality.

Is this fluid backward-compatible to the early 722.9s?

Hi Glyn,

Mine is a 2008 W204 5-speed AT C180K.
My mechanic told me that the newer 7speed ATF fluid can be used in mine.
Is that true?

Thanks in advance.

No - the new 236.15 Blue transmission fluid is for 722.9 Plus transmissions only. The present formulation is not reverse compatible.

Might be worth posting that link you posted to the document describing the newer fluid and how it works in the stop/start cars' gearboxes.

Easy to understand and answers this very question.

Glyn, thanks for the prompt reply.

Just got more info from my mechanic pertaining to the ATF.
It's ZF Semi-Synthetic 236.14 specs.
I suppose that should be the correct ATF for my 2008 W204 5 Speed AT?

Warmest regards,
Ricky Liew

Yes - 236.14 is the correct fluid for your transmission.

Interestingly however - ZF does not hold an approval for 236.14. Being a transmission manufacturer themselves it might be someone else's product repackaged. They are still required to request a read across & listing.

Make sure the packaging states Approved MB 236.14 & not the usual BS "Suitable for" game that some play.

Repeat as requested.

We will soon be launching a Wiki which will have all of this info in one place for easy reference. A monumental task that is going to require help from members to keep populated & relevant.

I just found this YouTube video on 7G TronicPlus, it mentions the W204 at the end. If W204 has START/STOP function, then you have it.

If the base transmission is a 722.6 you cannot use the new fluid.

So I know I have the 7G Tronic Plus since I have a U.S. spec C250 BlueEfficiency (MY 2013, build date 6/2012 in South Africa), even though I DO NOT have STOP/START function.

My manual doesn't state what the capacity is for the 7G Plus for my M271 engine. Anyone know? Thanks!
