Mine went around 4 years too. It's a shame this wasn't a recall. MB has to have known about this, simply given the number of replacements they would've done. I lived with for a while then bit the bullet and had it replaced at the dealer (he did give me a 20% discount though).

Recalls aren't issued unless there is a risk of injury or death to driver/occupant. And they certainly aren't issued for the mere fact that a part broke or is no longer operational.
Come on now... Brake pads/rotors get replaced, spark plugs get replaced, water pumps get replaced, thermostats, ignition coils, window regulators/motors, alternators, a multitude of sensors... If every time a part or a component stopped working, you expect that the manufacturer is supposed to recall it and fix it for free, then they might as well give you a lifetime warranty. But they don't.

Mine is not broken but I may just buy that aluminum shaft piece just in case.
Not having one on hand means mine will break. Having one on hand means mine will probably never break according to the laws of the universe.

Got mine today, Fast shipping by the way. took me less than an hour from removing the control knob to replacing the damaged part... very simple & works like a charm if any member has the same issue with their control knob, need to order this part & save money by replacing the damage part instead of the entire control. thanx again SafetySell24 for the sale

2008 C300 6-Speed - Retired Land Rover Disco II
I've had the C300 one week, model year 2008. It's 2016, I assume this will be it's second command knob failure! Good times. Awesome to find the great resources people have provided over the years though

I have the same issue. To my knowledge this is the second time it has gone out on my 2009 C350. The first time that it went out since I have owned the car it was replaced under warranty. I found this one online via Ebay. Basically it just seems to be the metal shaft that is needed for the repair. I have pry tools that are used for repairing electronics such as cell phones. When you guys have done this repair before is there much need for pry tools or can you take everything apart that you need to with just hands? Here is a link for the metal replacement piece that I found:
