New Info on an Old Topic

If you drive in a winter environment, get a copy of the new November issue of Automobile magazine and turn to page 98. Read first, then we can discuss!

New tests with top end tires of different categories vs. winter, once again, showing the problem with trying to get by in the winter with all season tires. Interesting data on stopping distances.

I read that article this weekend with great interest as I am currently running DWS tires year round. Makes you think....

In Atlanta, you may be ok...probably not much packed snow for you....but north of the Mason-Dixon is another story. I'm just glad I've got Blizzaks on rims waiting for the inevitable Michigan winter and I hope the guy behind me does too!

Ay, there's the rub. The worst state for this danger, that I lived in was Parkersburg, West Virginia. They had very cold, snowy winters. After 1st winter, I put a used set of bias-ply (oem) studded snows on my muscle car for winters, and loaded the trunk with cylinder blocks and sand bags until rear sag started to be an issue with catching the snow compacted under the frame.

Considering all vehicles, the rwd pick-up trucks were the worst, with 3/32" at best tread depth and usually no extra weight over the rear axle. They got stuck on flat plowed roads.

Since then, I've always kept an eye on the rear view mirror, especially in winters when approaching a stop ahead.

I've been to Parkersburg! It was the destintation and turnaround for a standard road trip we used to take from Detroit for vehicle evaluation. Even without snow, I remember almost understeering off a winding mountain road (no guard rails) after pushing a Saab 9000 too hard. The Alfa 164 on the trip did much better! I cannot even imagine that area with snow and ice!

I got a set of 18 inch amg rims and Pirelli winter tires ready for this winter. I had all season last year and I got crazy fish tails. (this is Canada btw)

I got rwd instead of 4matic, I don't know why but it was stupid of me.

I did too, partially because it was the only was to get a stick, and partially because I wanted it lighter, more responsive, less fuel thirsty, and less heavy feeling...all of which I experience in comparison to the typical C3004MATIC dealer loaner. With the right snows, you'll be just fine, as I have found for three winters. Your 18s are a bit large for snows, as smaller/narrower is better, but at least you will have the right rubber compound for traction.

No need to worry about running DWS's all year in Atlanta. Those big differences in hard packed snow are irrelevant down there. For a dry emergency stop from 70 mph (which I have only seen on the track, as routine) , the DWS will get rid of 90% of your speed energy while still rolling at 22 mph, at the distance where the summer tire stopped you. No needed.

Great simple article, demonstrating the benefit of running winter tires when you live in cold, snowy winters. You even have the option of a modest summer tire as your main tire, depending on your situation.

While you are looking at that magazine, look 10 pages further for an article about a VERY inovative car that had it's Swedish design haydays in the 80's and early 90's. My 83 Saab 900 Turbo hatchback 5 speed was my favorite, practicle daily driver, as I liked a unique ride.
