I'm getting this message. Does it mean my wear indicators have tripped and i need to replace pads or does it mean generally just check based on mileage or time? searched the forum bit didn't see a thread on this issue.

More likely your brakes need changing just have a look at the brakes see how low they are and get them checked.

Brake sensor needs replacing. Means the pads are low enough to trip the sensor and will need to be replaced.
