Cruise control won't engage

Cruise control won't engage
Yesterday during a 4 hr trip my cruise control failed to engage. I had just stopped at a rest stop after 2+hrs and when I got back on the road the cruise control would not engage. The speedometer LEDs lit up, the display indicated the speed that I had set, but as soon as I removed my foot from the accelerator the spped started to immediately drift downward. Everything looks normal, no error messages, but it's not working. I've searched the forum but I can't find anyone with a similar problem.
My car is a 2010 C300 6 speed manual, no ESP or other speed control options. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

As you have a manual transmission, I'm going to GUESS that it may be the clutch is not fully engaging. What I mean is that if you have the cruise on and barely touch the clutch, it will disengage the cruise (same as touching the brake). It MAY have something to do with that.

ChuckinTucson,
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I don't think that's what's happening here. Once the cruise lever is pulled, the display indicates that all is well, except that the speed is not being held. If the system sensed that the clutch was not engaged then I doubt that the display would indicate all is well. I guess I'm still baffled.
I read somewhere in the forums that a dying battery can start to cause electrical gremlins. I was thinking of having that checked and hoping it was that simple.
