Help Please...NTG4 COMAND 7" pop up screen issues

Hi Lads
A bit of help please.

Thanks to some of the members here I was able to upgrade my audio 20 to the COMAND Nav 6 DVD changer HU and 7" fold down screen.

Easy install, spliced into the stock screen power harness, as well documented. Have also photographed it, if anyone's interested.

However, a week later, my screen sometimes opens and shuts immediately, audio plays on, however. Press the screen cover button, it recycles, and works fine.
Sometimes the screen opens up blank. Again, the audio is on.
An off-on recycle and all is well again...?

Why would this be happening?
No grinding or squeaking sounds, weird smells, etc. Have opened it out again, incase something was jamming, shorting, but could not find anything wrong.

Help please...

MB C220 Sport W204, 18" AMGs, Grey lthr, xenons, p'ktronic, HKardon, Comand nav.
Did you have your upgrade checked over and put on the MB Star computer system? This is usually needed to ensure that the vehicle systems know that the standard equipment has been changed and allows the new stuff to be logged. It may be something to do with this. An independent with access to the Star system could do it. Just my 10 cents.

Hi. That's something I thought of, but didn't want to dwell on.
But why would it work for so many days and then act up like this?
Today, it's working fine..knock on wood!

Yup. Back to its ways today. I just can't fathom this.
Could it be the main "plug" behind the COMAND unit? I did fiddle with it a bit when changing the HU out..?

Have opened the whole thing out again, checked all the wiring a million times, but the screen flipping in and out is just not stopping...

Opens with the logo-shuts down, opens blank-shuts down, doesn't open at all. Sometimes cover closes halfway, sometimes fully..

After doing this a few times, the "Warning, don't let COMAND distract you...etc etc.." comes up and then all is well.

It opens and shuts very smoothly and silently, so I dismissed anything getting stuck in the mechanism.

But this is happening at least 20 times a day! The Audio works perfectly through all this (of course, until you press the On/Off knob to switch it off) and displays on the MFD.

Can this be the COMAND? The Screen? The Wiring?

I really need some help here, guys..please

Is there any way to make the screen stay open and not flip in and out?

Also, a bit off topic..my Audio 20 before the not-so-successful-COMAND-install, (flippy screen problems, backup camera problems..), displayed the phone book, as also the cellular carrier name (eg. AT&T, Vodafone, etc) besides the cell reception bars.
This thing, doesn't do either.
I have unpaired and re-paired the phone (i6+) many times, but the only on-phone option under bluetooth is "disconnect" and "forget this device."

To be honest, I've just had the worst experience with this install.
My screen started with a few white horizontal lines, they covered most of the screen and now it's just dead. The flip motor "stay open sensor"(?) has died so it keeps flipping in and out until I disengage the mechanism and it always stays open - sort of defeats the purpose.
Regarding the random phone issue - unfortunately no solution. I've had to go back to the stock audio 20 whilst a friend tried to figure out what's wrong with the damn NTG4. Audio 20 Bluetooth working flawlessly so far.

Did you find the problem?

I have a 2008 W204 with a factory installed COMAND NTG4.

There was a day 1.5 years ago, when the flip up display of the COMAND was doing weird things. Now the ghosts have returned.

When I started the car, the cover on the dashboard opened and the screen rotated as it should. But after the Mercedes logo, the screen went back down and the cover closed too. But the cover did not close fully, it was still a couple of millimeters open. Radio was playing, and all the controls worked.

When I switched it off and on, the same behavior happened again.

I checked fuses #26 and #11. No luck.

Then, on the following day, when I started the car, the problems were gone and everything worked 100% for the next 416 days.

But now the ghosts are in the system again. Can you help me in figuring out, what's wrong.

Sometimes, the cover opens and I see a Mercedes logo, before the screen goes down again, but audio works.

Sometimes, the cover opens and the screen is black, but audio works.

Sometimes the system starts as it should and there are no problems. When this happens, I can go to the Engineering Menu, but there are no errors in the Engineering Menu.

Sometimes the cover closes as it should. Many times it stays a couple of millimeters open.

Based on these observations, I would assume that the screen is OK, I can see a picture. I would also assume that the head unit is OK because there is audio, buttons work, and I see the radio station in the multifuction display.

Could there be a dirty position sensor microswitch that does not give a reliable cover or screen position signal?

Hi

That is EXACTLY what used to happen to me as well.
Believe me, I went through everything, even opened the whole thing out to it's components, replaced the screen, took the circuit board to a TV repair facility, where they replaced some IC's, etc.
Nothing worked. Came back worse than before!
Got so fed up that I chucked it and bought another pre-owned unit from eBay.
Knock on wood, there have been no issues with this one.
These screens are really rubbish! What was MB thinking!
