C250 BlueEfficiency?

When I came out of the store the other day I had a car parked to me that appeared in every way identical to mine except it had BlueEfficiency badges up front. I almost tried to get in that car until I noticed the badge. I've never seen this on any other C-Class car in this area. I know it's a marketing term for fuel efficiency but what would the difference be on just a C250?

I looked it up on WiKi but I couldn't find much info.

MDMercedesGuy 07-07-2016 02:26 PM

At least in 2012, all C250s in the US were badged BlueEffeciency.

michail71 07-07-2016 03:23 PM

Odd I never noticed that before. I guess they stopped in 2013.

jbt56 07-07-2016 07:36 PM

When I bought my car (CPO), I asked about that, thinking about 'BlueTec', but the salesman explained that in Europe, 'blue' is what we in the US refer to as 'green', meaning 'environmentally friendly'. Apparently, MB technology won some sort of Blue award, hence the badge. It was discontinued after the one year, he explained, due to confusion such as that seen here, and mine, thinking about diesel technology.
When I bought my car, it was the first I noticed with the badge; I have since seen/noticed a couple of others around town.

michail71 07-07-2016 10:12 PM

Blue makes me think of clean diesel too. Somewhere marketing execs have drilled that into my brain, lol.

NewtwoMB 07-08-2016 11:19 AM

Not sure about the US / N America, but in Europe the Blue Efficiency (both Gas and Diesel) had other "green" credentials like stop-start, higher output (bhp/torque) through twin turbos and other features. :zoom:

BlueEfficiency is just lots of small tweaks and features implemented to reduce emissions and fuel consumptions. Here's a quick tidbit from Mercedes-Benz.com's site

Incorporating lower-displacement engines, ECO start/stop functions and improved aerodynamics, BlueEFFICIENCY models are energy efficient and fully optimised for lowering emissions. Coupled with less rolling resistance and weight saving measures such as reduced windscreen thickness, and lighter alloy wheels – BlueEFFICIENCY technology cuts running costs without compromising on performance.

My 2012 C350 has those badges up front as well. It is simply marketing, but I was not aware that they stopped putting them in after a year. I've always used that as an indicator of facelifted models similar to looking at the bottom rear bumper as well as the LED running lights in front.

Adi-Benz 07-08-2016 04:52 PM

Yeah, as I go to Europe a lot (fam) when I think of "BlueEff/BlueTec/etc" I think of euro models.

Like the golf bluetec, gets like 50mpg.

Here in the states we get nothing like that, but idk.

michail71 07-08-2016 05:26 PM

It probably confused the US market into thinking it meant diesel. Having nothing else to go on that's what I would have thought.

So in the US I guess it means 2012 model. :)

......now I really understand why the little coupe calc'd just under 35 MPG on a 450 mile round trip to Carmel............

ez

ez

I managed a little over 38 MPG on one trip but that was under ideal conditions.

I can do as bad as 22 if I'm having fun. :)

Thats cute

I get 17 driving semi-fun.

LOL

I wish I had the option to buy a 350, those get better mpg I think.

Ik no math

Josh.A.Hussey 07-10-2016 10:44 AM

Ahaha. Man, I must be driving REALLY fun because I don't come close to 17MPG on an average day...

Adi-Benz 07-10-2016 11:45 AM

I was seeing older posts; while the 350 does have a bigger engine, it works less 'hard' so I think it gets better mpg on the highway. :S

I'm a student I have to worry about this stuff xD

None of them are working 'hard' at highway speeds in the US. These cars are geared to cruise at higher speeds than we have here. At highway speeds the C250 is riding boost and barely working.

I regularly hit 34+ on the highway. I doubt any of the 3.5s could achieve that with regularity.

michail71 07-12-2016 11:30 AM

I think he was comparing the older C300 engine to the C350 or newer (w204) C300.

Good god, I get like 17MPG on the 3.0 C300

Karasu 07-14-2016 06:57 PM

Bought a used 2012 C250 (which is really a 1.8 liter engine) that came with those Bluetec badges. I promptly removed them and all others that were attached with adhesive. (I hate badges and yes I'd remove AMG badges too, which I consider to be a bit like saying "I'm cool" which of course means that you're not ;-) Recently did a run from Arizona to California and up and down HWY 1/Big Sur area. Got ~33mpg overall and in one section was running 28mpg at 90mph.

ezshift5 07-14-2016 08:27 PM

...another positive report on the C250's fuel efficiency..............

I left the (i got to show you no stinking) BADGES untouched. Only two - one port/one starboard - BLUE Efficiency is a rather small presentation. Those and "C250" port side aft are sum up the badges..................

Reckon I missed out on AMG (thought that a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder - even if turbo'd - did not rate the level of recognition,

33 MPG is impressive. You can do better - if you choose.

Great looking car.

Do you have a Coupe (or are you fond of doors)?

ez sends from NoCal

I'll look for the thread sometime soon, see if I can find it!

michail71 07-14-2016 10:06 PM

When I asked this question I had no idea the thread would take such amusing turns.

Karasu 07-14-2016 11:32 PM

Oh, mine never came with an AMG badge. Just sayin' if it had, that badge would be gone too. Have a friend in Cali with a C63 AMG who de-badged his car, too. Just looks cleaner in my opinion. Mine's a sedan in that odd-but-grows-on-you (or at least me) 'Cuprite Brown'. Neither were criteria for my car search, but the best available option for me just happened to come that way. Love the car. Plenty fast enough. Great in the corners. And yes, great mileage/performance ratio. The side body line 'crease' just looks better to me than that on the later C models also.

michail71 07-15-2016 12:20 AM

I guess I'm not as evolved as some of you, lol. I'd keep the AMG badge. Although I always do keep mine. As a personal preference I always feel de-badged cars look a bit naked. Plus I'd drives me crazy when I can't figure out what model another car is out on the street.

Although I would consider removing 4matic if I had that.

I'm always shocked when I see a really high end car with the CarMax logo still on or the dealer plate.

We can try... From a 3 day trip recently. :zoom:
