Lights Switch has no OFF

My son lately brought in a MY 2011 W204 from UK, right hand drive and speedo in miles. Strangely there is no OFF position in the light switch. There is auto, manual and all the rest. When he complained to MB Liverpool, UK, he was advised to leave the switch in the auto position all the time.
Is that possible? Could I add on an external switch to off the lights? My indie here is very reluctant to do it.
Shan.

I don't think the W204 (in the states) has had an "off" position on the lights since 2010. I agree it makes no sense.

Has anybody tried putting in an external switch that could control the +12V input to the switch?

Yep, there is no off position. The lights should be in auto all the time. They'll come on when they need to. Oh and if you're the po-po, you won't be able to sneak up on anyone with this motor...
