Cleaning Your Key

Threw some clothes in the washer and when they were done I went to take them out to put in the dryer. Then saw my car key at the bottom of the washer. Oh sheeeeet! Figured that was $300 or so for a new key. BUT......tried the key and the car started and it also locks and unlocks the car! So, although I would HIGHLY discourage anyone of being a dumbass and using this method to clean their key it IS waterproof. Thank you, Mercedes.

Just in case some water penetrated I would open it up & let it dry naturally in a warm spot.

I thought about that, but didn't want to disturb anything and it didn't appear like any water had breached it. If it would have water would have been leaking out of it when I picked it up I'm sure. I did warm if up a bit and had a fan on it for a number of hours. If it does stop working down the road I'll know why, but if it hasn't after three days, I think it is good to go.

Keys are easy to take apart depending on the model year. Some you take the back off. Some you remove the metal key and pop out the insides to Change the battery. Either way, you can get In them and make sure they are dry.

You can only disassemble older keys and they are definitely not water proof or really resistant for that matter. The newer keys with a triangle shaped panic button are sealed better and cannot be disassembled which is probably the one you have that managed to see another day. Glad it worked out for you they are expensive!

Takes a 5025 battery. You pull out the metal key and use it to press the release for the back of the key that is in the space that the metal key normally occupies.

No, I opened up the back where the battery is and it did not show any signs of any kind of moisture intrusion whatsoever. I was really surprised as there is no specific gasket of seal around it. Was just really really lucky I guess.

You must have a good spin dry machine.

I do. Clothes are always dry after I put them in. Keys......I can't say. I never gave it a chance to find out. I grabbed it when I saw it laying in the bottom of the washer.
