Electrical glitches with aftermarket radio and steering wheel controls...
At first everything was wonderful, the radio worked, steering wheel controls worked and I was blissfully driving to and from work again. Then one Sunday I drove the boy to his football game and when I parked the radio didn't turn off when the key was removed. Strange I thought... I got in the habit of turning it off myself and though puzzled didn't give it much thought as I was pretty busy. Then I started getting intermittent SRS warnings when I'd turn the car on. Then the sun roof started acting up. I could raise it up but lowering it had to go in tiny steps rocking the switch up and down. Same opening it and closing it... Then the battery started going dead after 7 hours or so...
Well I replaced the battery and nothing changed. It was due for replacement anyway so no loss there. Following this I went back into the radio wiring and removed the connects 2 module and EVERYTHING went back to normal with the exception of the loss of steering wheel controls. Sun roof opens and closes smoothly, no more SRS warnings, battery maintains charge with out issue.
My thought was that there was a glitch in the Connects 2 module so this last weekend I bought the Metra AXXESS AX-MB1-SWC and installed it.
It won't program up properly and when hooked up with the car off and the key out turns the radio on and tries to initialize, which it shouldn't do unless the key was turned to on and then leaves the radio on (note this is without the key in the car). I talked with their tech support who tells me that there is an issue with the CAN and it needs to be reset and to do so I MUST have a factory radio installed... We measured the voltage on the pink wire on the harness (which he said was for the CAN) and it was 1.5 volts. He said it should be closer to 5 volts and resetting the CAN was the next step.
I've done some reading about and see that if there is a factory radio installed and the ECU(?) is reset and you don't have the radio code you won't have radio following the reset. This apparently is what will also happen if the battery is disconnected (which it was as stated above yet I still have radio).
What do you guys think might be going on, and how do I go about trouble shooting it to find the root problem? Or do I need to reset the ECU / CAN and may that be done outside the dealership and without a factory radio?
Thanks for your help!!
