Removing chrome trunk lid trim?
 

Hey guys, I'm wondering how you remove this trim from off the car? I tried to wrap it on the car and the corners kept coming out horribly and my OCD was acting up, I think it would be much easier to do off the car. I read somewhere you have to remove the trunk trim? Does anyone know?

I'd love a how-to guide because I need to fix mine as well since its peeling off!

really hoping someone can help us with this! I read something along the lines of you remove the trunk liner and you can slide the chrome piece out, but that doesn't really make sense to me...(link to what I'm referring to below)

Edit: after reading this again I think that you take the trunk lid interior liner off... Then the chrome piece pops out from the back (inside trunk lid)... I might try this tomorrow

Removing this doesn't require going through the interior lining at all. There are two torx screws that hold it then three plastic clips. Look up the "backup camera" write-up for more information.

lol unfortunately I figured this out the hard way, spent a while this morning taking all the trunk lid liner off to find out that it isn't the way to take off the chrome piece. I ended up wrapping it on the car and after about 10 tries I got it perfect! I did eventually take the screws out your discussing but I felt like I was going to break the clips so I left it on.

Pop the chrome piece off and take it to a local vinyl shop. They could probably wrap it on the car, but if you're paranoid on it peeling again they could get to the edges better with it off.

did it myself today, came out very nice, 3M is good stuff!

I blacked mine out with 3M blackout tape, look for the right width, it took all of 20 minutes. Clean the chrome well, and take your time, it will come out great. I used tape because if you dont like the look .. zip! and its gone.

Good point. On a black car, matching the paint is more seamless. For me, I went with the plastidip because I didn't want the window trim and the other chrome accents standing out.

So the plastidip actually matches the rubber trim, so it disappears.

yes I'm actually doing the same with the window trim! I agree it blends with the rubber and wrapping it would be too difficult for my skill set. I'm also plasti-dipping the chrome fog light housing this week, it also has plastic surrounding so I believe it will blend. Thanks! Looks good btw how did u go about masking off the trim, when you open the door is it chrome?

I actually removed the trim, as it all pops off, but use plastic trim removal tools to do it, and take your time, and it will come off pretty easily. Start at the end, and slowly move down the trim piece popping them gently.

I painted the entire peice of trim, so when you open the door, it's all black. The only thing I may not black out chrome wise is the door handle, as I'm not sure how well that will hold up, but I may try it. That's the beauty of plasti-dip, if you don't like it, just peel it off. A can is only $6 at lowes, so it's a no brainer to me.

oh yes it so much easier to plastidip things off the car, thanks for the information! Did you have to remove mirrors to take of trim? I remember watching video somewhere and they said that.

To remove the trim by the window track, simply lower the window and start at the door jam area lifting the trim, once you get 3/4 of it lifted, simply pull on the trim, and it will come out. It's only behind the mirror about 1".

Its a good idea to tape the ends of the chrome trim piece so they don't scratch the trunk lid paint as the trim is removed. Mine has very sharp edges!

Personally I plastidip'd the emblems and that trim piece on my black car. I think it looks fine being matte. if you really wanted to, you could plastidip and then put some glossifier over it so it matches the glossy paint.

I got mine wrapped without taking it off, if done right and with quality wrap it should stay on. Been 6+ months now in snow+rain etc and no peeling so far

Plasti-Dip is the way to go. Did mine 3 years ago and still going strong.
