I have had excellent service from my car thus far. However, a friend with the same year and model just recently had her transmission go out at 160K.
Should I consider trading my car now?
It has been out of warranty about a year.

A) What happened?
B) Have you serviced your transmission? (Drain and filled tranny/torque converter fluid at the recommended service intervals?)

These parts don't tend to go kaboom with proper maintenance. There are Benzes with half a million to over a million miles. Mind you - maintenance is important.

I have done EVERY service as recommended since I bought the car as a CPO with 35K miles.
A salesman's wife had it before me.
I am now retired on fixed income and cannot afford $7,000 for a new trannie, but would like to keep my C300 for at least 2-3 more years. I drive about 12K miles per year on freeways in So Cal.

Then you should be fine. Just make sure you drain and fill the front and rear diff fluid at around the 100,000 mile mark as well.
