W204 7G transmission progress update

Here's a briefing

-Transmission made noise from around 40km and up
-Fluctuated with the speed of the car in motion, sounded like it was coming from around the shifter area
-Had a spinning noise and sounded like metal on metal grinding

Always assumed it was the tranny/torque converter/transfer case, brought it to a Mercedes "specialist" indie and he confirmed that it needed new bearings in the torque converter or transfer case, at the back of the tranny. Quoted at $2800 CAD which is like $2300 USD

Not many topics of repairs bc Mercedes suggests ppl change the entire tranny, which is safer but much bigger dollars.

Anyone ever do it and solve the problem?

And thoughts on quote? There's probably no more than $500 worth of parts, does it warrant them to send it out to a shop and both make $2300 worth of labour?

What y'all think?

Have you ever had a transmission service done? have you ever changed the transfer case and differential fluids F and R?

4 matic fluid needs to be changed and I'd say around 60,000 k or sooner or you may run into bearing problems up front. It is not a lifetime fluid like some are led to believe.

Somewhat irrelevant to my all my questions in the original post and maybe u just want to share your knowledge on the matter as there has been a lot of threads about the topic, but I have changed my tranny fluid at Mercedes, cost was $700 plus tax to have the torque converter fluid extracted too last year, it is a common problem. I just want to shed light on the subject that maybe a new tranny from Mercedes isn't the only option, if you live within the gta or Ontario for that matter.

Hopefully this process can help some people save money if the problem arises.

I spoke to the shop manager today and he said the transmission shop has fixed a few 722.9 or whatever it is, most recently a glk that has the same drivetrain. They open it up and service the transfer case, apparently make the opening bigger so the transfer case gets more fluid, seal it back up and put in on the car. I asked about a warranty and they said 12 months or 20,000km.

Mercedes just sells ppl on remanufactured transmission, takes your old one, fixes it, and sells it as a remanufactured transmission to the next so they are performing the same process.

Let's not be scared to talk about transmissions up in here, it's a great car that needs some repairs, all cars do!
*Just don't post advice on the necessary fluid changes needed for the car, it's been beaten to death and sometimes this might be unavoidable i.e a shop not putting enough fluid in when they do the transmission flush

You didn't mention anything about a fluid change in your original post and I believe Colin G was going through a process of elimination where the fluid change is the lowest-hanging fruit/easiest item to check first before delving into more compliacted matters based on the info provided to him at the time of reply.

He's trying to help you with his advice based on the information you posted. Let's not be too harsh

Nothing scary about transmissions. They're just expensive to repair especially in Canada so since a lot of people think they're sealed for life and hence skip on the fluid changes, problems start to appear and that's usually the first thing to check. Good luck in all cases and please keep us posted about the solution and repair.

I both my 2008 c300 with a faulty transfer case bearing just like yours. I pulled the transmission out and brought it to my transmission guy, he was able to source all the bearings, they are all available since this is a pretty common failure, it was around 300-400$ for all the parts, seals include. It costed me 200$ for him to install the bearing and press them in the transmission.

Removing and installing the transmission isn't fun but its doable and will save you about 70% of the cost. There's a few tips you need to know before you do this tho or you will regret it, I was lucky enough to have all the tips I needed from a local mercedes specialist.

It is very important to change the transmission fluid in these cars every 60 000km specially if they are 4matic, they are 7 speed transmission with 7 clutches wearing and releasing clutch material into the fluid, mercedes was crazy on saying it was a life time fluid, yes if you calculate the life time of the transmission being the time of the warranty.
