2011 Mercedes C250
2011 C250 Timing Chain Broken
Good day Mercedes family, hopefully someone can assist.
I have a 2011 C250 with only 60,000 km. Always serviced on time.
Timing Belt snapped and car has been in the garage for over a month now. MB Melbourne have said they are trying to contact MB Germany for a way forward but have come back with a whopping AUD20,000 bill.
What is the lifetime for a timing chain, for a car that has only done 60,000 km is this not a manufacturing defect ?
How best can i proceed ? Thanks in advance for those that can advise.

Ouch, we just had a thread on timing chains. Usually chains last way beyond 200k miles but these m271 4cyl engines don't have the best design and you got the worse possible outcome. 20 000$ is absurd, call around salvage yards, their are plenty of mercedes/german specific scrap yards that stock up on these engine since a little fender bender can total one of these mercedes resulting in a lot of them getting stripped out and sold for parts. A used engine with under 100k and a warranty should not cost you more then 5000$ and that is a high price, I've seen them anywhere from 2000$ to 5000$ used.

Btw, nice thread for the guys who stated there was no problem with the timing chains of W204. Quite the opposite, this timing chain is a piece of crap... it better be a timing belt - at least you know when to service it and it is much cheaper to fix any problems.

Did you notice any symptoms prior to the problem? Any strange sounds, vibrations, knocks and etc?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that thread referencing the V6 engine?

To those who couldn't see timing chain related problems on every thread page on the W204 forum and wanted me to show them. I am not a mechanic and I do not care if it is V6 or i4, I just see there is a PROBLEM with timing chains.

Bad luck about the timing chain. My C250 (same engine as yours, M271 EVO) had done over 200,000km (125k miles), mainly highway driving. I changed the timing chain a few weeks ago as a precaution. It definitely needed changing, it had "stretched" (or worn) by 10mm compared to the new chain. However, although the timing marks were off a bit as a result of the stretch, the car ran OK. I suppose it's possible the chain might have completely broken sometime in the future.
Given high mileage on these timing chains is clearly possible, it makes me wonder if there was some other cause to your failure, such as a failure of the tensioner, a guide rail or the like. It might be impossible to tell now if there's various other damage to the engine. In your case I'd definitely be looking to source a replacement engine from a wrecker. Ask to have the timing chain, guides and tensioner replaced before installation.
PS Changing a timing chain in these engines is not really much, if any, harder than a timing belt in other cars. It shouldn't take an experienced tech more than 3-5 hours tops for the whole job. Very little disassembly is required for the timing chain alone.

MBWorld Fanatic!
You're seriously missing the point here. Yes, as was discussed, I4 engines have the odd problem with these chains, but in the case of the OP, he/she has done 200,000km. This issue doesn't exist on the V6.
There's a saying about a mountain and a mole hill...

M271!!! That is 1 engine out of the 9 that they put in these cars that has timing chain issue how hard is that to understand ? Just dont get a 4cyl c250 if you're so scared of replacing timing chains prematurely, you dont have to state your not a mechanic, we know that, you also have poor sense of judgement.

When you buy a new car, how can you know how many of the engines have problems with timing chains?
And... 9 engines in W204? Are you sure? When I read the threads I see only 3-4 engines that people buy. Oh my poor sense of judgement...

Your logic is like saying oh the toyota camry hybrid has a defective electric motor which fail prematurely, surely you wouldn't say camry in general have electric motor issue ? You would only say the hybrid model.. As you would with the 4cyl w204.. Not rying to be smart just using common sense and I would imagine you would of understood in the last thread but clearly you didn't..
