prepaid maintenance....worth it?
 

Dealer is trying to up-sell me 2 services - 40k and 50k - for $1200... Thats a little steep isnt it?
how much is 40k and 50k service? an independent shop would be much cheaper or...do it myself.

so my question is...did anyone do the prepaid service? was it worth it?

I buy oil for cheap at Walmart and do oil changes myself.

Make sure you grab the right oil filter (I always use OEM, but many people here just grab the MANN filter), and the right oil (Mobil 1 0W40). The latter can be had for $28 (CAD) on sale at Canadian tire. And it comes in 4.8? (whatever the new one is)L jugs.

This is the easiest car ever to do an oil change. A/B services are mostly a cash grab with a lot of "inspections" that you can do yourself, easily

^While you don't NEED every tool above, if you want to do things the right way, it's worth grabbing them. Many of these tools (oil pick, 74mm flute, oil thing to put oil into it more easily) work as long as you have a German car (VW/Audi/BMW/Merc)

If she likes pampering, find an independent shop and she can probably have two full spa days with money left over for a nice dinner.

$1200 sounds very expensive to me regardless what is included in the services. If dealer is trying hard to sell things to customers, dealers will make money.
Years ago when I signed a new car purchase contract, finance person tried selling some extended protection. After he heard me saying a few times NO he said what if the car failed outside warranty period. I said I will buy another new car from you. He looked very unhappy.

Never ceases to amaze me though: the need and greed of the dealers...........we just sold you a xx,xxx dollars car! And congratulations! Would you like to get wheel insurance? Prepaid main? Paint protection? Blah blah blah!!

I was in a dealership this past weekend and listening to a phone call between a service writer and a customer on the phone. Without writing all about the conversation, the service writer quoted the customer $1,647 for a three pre-paid maintenance "special". If I recall correctly, the customer had at least 50,000 miles but I am not sure which intervals were quoted.
I am hoping to do most of the regular maintenance on my own and save $$$

If you look and see what work is actually included in the various 'routine services', you can pretty easily tell how much each package is worth. As mentioned already, an oil change is usually included, sometimes an air filter change, tire rotation, and then the various 'inspections'. The inspections are performed while the car is on the lift and the tech is waiting for the oil to drain. The purpose of these inspections is actually to sell you additional work while you're in the service bay: "Sir, we're seeing some wear on your brake pads, if you'd like, we can take of that today while you're here ..."

In any event, take the list of MBZ-recommended items to a decent independent shop and ask what they'd charge, I'll bet about half what the dealer quotes. For example, on my car, the dealer wanted $240 for an oil change (oh, excuse me, a "service A"). Last time I was at Jiffy Lube they said they'd do it for about a hundred bucks. And as others have said it would be way less than that if you do it yourself.
